The Constitutional Review Commission was established by an Act of the National Assembly (the CRC Act, 2017) with the mandate of drafting a new Constitution. The Oath of Secrecy was administered by CRC Secretary, Mr. Omar Ousman Jobe. The technical committee on Public Finance Management is charged with the task to investigate and consider any technical matter related to public finance management, to review the current fiscal policy of the Government of The Gambia and come up with a measures necessary for strengthening public finance management institutions among others, while the Technical Committee on Land, natural resources and the Environment will review, analyze and make recommendations on the issues identified by the CRC relating to land, natural resources and the environment; identify and analyze additional issues relevant to the theme of the Committee for consideration by the Commission; look into the existing laws and policies of The Gambia relevant to land, natural resources and the environment, take into consideration on the existing national and global contexts, and advise on whether any such laws or policies are fundamental to constitutional recognition. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Cherno Sulayman Jallow, Chairperson of the CRC thanked the members of the committees for diligently responding to the call to work with the commission. He told committee members that their role is very critical in the quest towards building a ‘strong and accountable’ institutions for The Gambia. Justice Jallow said constitution is expected to set the framework as a measure to tackling numerous issues ‘our society today grapples with such as land disputes, environment related cases.’ He further implored on the swore-in members to take the assignment seriously as they commence work in earnest. Justice Jallow opined that: “We don’t only have confidence in you, but we rely heavily on you.” For his part, Commissioner Lamin S. Camara, the Chairperson of technical committee on Land, Natural Resources and the Environment said The Gambia have the talent and expertise to develop what he called a ‘home-grown’ constitution for the country. He further thanked the members for accepting the assignment given to them. Also addressing the gathering, Commissioner Fatoumatta Jallow, Chairperson of the technical committee on public finance management also urged members to give their best in the process of assisting the commission in the journey toward developing a new constitution. Alhagie T. S. Alieu Njie, a member of Public Finance committee in his vote of thanks expressed appreciation over the challenge accorded to them. He promised that they will give their very best in ensuring that The Gambia produce a ‘durable’ constitution for her people.
