Central River Region-North Banni Ward councilor Sorry Darboe has been under fire from his electorates who are now demanding him to step down after he was found guilty of unlawful tree felling by Nianija District tribunal in December, last year.

Chief of Sami district Morro Jawla handed Mr. Darboe to the Niani district tribunal who found him guilty of tree cutting and fined him 15, 000 dalasis in default to serve three months in prison. He was said to have been using the name of the ward to illegally cut down timbers claiming to be constructing a road linking Kunting to Laminkoto which many Alkalos and Village Development Committees said they were not aware of. He secured his councillorship through the United Democratic Party (UDP.

From Jamally to Manna and from Jarumehkoto to Kolikunda, Laminkoto, Sotokoi, Kibiri, Kunting and Bush town, electorates say they are standing by their demand that Mr. Darboe hand over his position because they are disappointed in him for illegally exploiting their bush in the name of constructing a ‘so-called’ road linking Laminkoto and Kunting.

Some of the Alkalos, VDC members and youth of the ward said Mr. Darboe should have applied other means to construct the road without cutting down big timbers in the forest, he did it without their consent and those of the authorities. “We are calling the people concerned to take action immediately before end of April for a bi-election to be conducted in Banni ward,” one of the ward members told our CRR correspondent.

Kuntaur Area Council chairman Saikou Jawara told our correspondent that he is not responsible to decide on what to do about councilor Darboe but the local government and lands minister. “The minister is aware of this and therefore anyone who has concern about it can go to the minister.”

Majority of the people in the ward who spoke to our correspondent said they are appealing to the minister for the second time to take immediate action so that such deliberate actions will not be repeated by other elected councilors.
