Government Blind to Economic Realities; Said Serekunda West NAM

By Almamo Kamaso

The Daily News:April 3, 2019

During his interventions at the adjournment debate yesterday, Hon Madi M.K. Ceesay member for Serekunda West told deputies that, the Gambia government is blind to the current economic realities. How can the executive increase the size of the cabinet and expand its embassies across the globe with the kind of ailing economy we have.
Hon Ceesay called on government to cut its coat according her size; we cannot afford large presidential delegations to international conferences and other meetings outside of the country likewise we need to have what is called regional representation. This way the country can make same savings for other sectors.
On the issues of health, the member said the government should consider putting up a health post in his constituency and also upgrade the Latri Kunda health post which is run basically on a voluntary basis at a government supported health post.
“Dictators are made and not born” the Serekunda West law maker told members of the National ASSEMBLY. He said there is nowhere the executive can hide behind executive orders and act otherwise.
President Adama Barrow and the entire coalition government must know that they are accountable to the electorate based on their campaign promises. Therefore this government must know that they are a transitional government be it three or five years.
On the issue of national ID cards; the honourable member said SEMLEX has not got the resources to give Gambians IDs. Since the operation started closed to a year; there is only one spot in the whole country where IDs are process and issued.
This is ridiculous as it cost Gambians more than a thousand dalasi. Considering the transport fares for people who lived up country, plus their cost living during the period they stay around waiting the process of their IDs.and the actual ID fees.
