The remains of Njaga Jagne, Lt. Col. Lamin Sanneh and Alagie Nyass were on 9 January 2019, handed over to their family members at the Ministry of Justice.

Addressing the gathering, Cherno Marena, the solicitor general, said that they were at the ceremony for the official handing over of three Gambians who died on the 30th December 2014 assuring that they would hand over the remains to their families.

Sheriff Kijera, representative of the Victims’ Centre, told the gathering that the day marked a very solemn occasion, noting that Njaga Jagne, Alagie Nyass and Lt. Col. Lamin Sanneh took a bold step to end dictatorship, fueled by impunity. “We recognise their actions and bravery,” he told the gathering.

He stated that they stood in solidarity with their families, adding that the government of The Gambia has fulfilled its promise. He prayed for the souls of the victims to rest in peace.

Mamie Ceesay, mother of the Victims’ Centre, also addressed the gathering and said that they have lived in pain since they lost their relatives. She further adduced that Gambians came together and took dictatorship from the country. She believed that this was why they were able to witness the ceremony. “Jammeh’s action shows us the good and the bad ones,” she told the gathering. She urged the families of the victims to rely on God and bear the loss. She then prayed for the victims.

Mr. Njie who represented late Lieutenant Colonel Lamin Sanneh, stated that it was both a very sad day, and unfortunate. He added that the victims loved their country and those who were rather terrorists described them as terrorists. “We are happy that the Government has recognized the service the victims had rendered,” he said. He further disclosed that even those who were supporting the dictator were not living in peace.

“The dictator was totally out of discipline. The world recognises the victims as heroes,” he told the gathering. He said that with the help of the government, they were able to locate where the victims were buried.

Mamour Jagne, the representative of late Njaga Jagne, in addressing the gathering, stated that heroes do not die. He gave a rundown of the life of Njaga Jagne and thanked the Ministry of Justice for the ceremony, adding that they were very grateful. He also prayed for the souls of the victims to rest in peace.

Mr. Ndow Njie, the representative of late Alagie Nyass, made similar remarks. He said that the fallen victims’ actions brought a new era into The Gambia, stating that the victims volunteered to liberate the country. “The victims were living in comfort in Europe and the U.S.A. and came and sacrificed for the nation. They are heroes and those who survived should be honoured,” he declared.

AbabacarTambadou, the attorney general and Minister of Justice, told the gathering that they were handing over the remains of the victims to their families to give them a befitting burial. He thanked everyone for making the ceremony possible and prayed for the victims.

The Inspector General of Police finally handed over the remains of the victims, placed in three coffins as well as the forensic certificates to the families. At this juncture, some women cried bitterly.
