The United Democratic Party (UDP) elected Lawyer Darboe as the Leader and Secretary General leading its new executive on Sunday 9th December 2018 in a congress at Paradise Suites hotel. The new executive will serve and run the affaires of the party for next two years ‘ More than 2000 delegates from all the regions across the country took part in the congress. The three day activity ended with a mass political rally yesterday with tens of thousands of militants at the buffer zone. The UDP militants are convince that with the able leadership of Lawyer Ousainou Darboe the party will grow and consolidate it achievements more in the coming years to pave a way for a UDP led government in 2021 elections. Among those who were re-elected included Aji Yam Secka as the deputy party leader and Secretary General; Alhagie Dembo Bojang also maintain his position as the National President among many others. The Congress also injected new blood and faces in the new UDP Executive; such as Hon Sulayman Saho as the New National Youth President replacing Lamin Cham whose nomination was disqualify. Lamin Cham is a civil servant and according to the amended UDP constitution and in line with the Constitution of the Gambia a civil servant cannot hold a position in any political party executive. In his closing statement the Secretary General and party Leader of the UDP Ousainou Darboe thank the gathering for the trust and confidence bestowed on them. He urged the newly elect executive members to deliver up to expectations. He applaud the delegates for the good job and asked them to serve as ambassadors of their various constituencies by moving UDP’s agenda forward. He went through lots of names all of who died in the course of the struggle of getting to where we are today. Darboe wish that all these fallen men and women were around today. He noted the challenges and hardships they went through during the Jammeh regime that cannot be over emphasized. Lawyer Darboe emphasized that UDP will ensure that there is unity among all political parties within the Gambia. He told members of the congress that the agenda of his party is development which according to him will move the country to a better standard. He added his party played a crucial role in the democratization and dispensation of the new Gambia. This he said is UDP’s fourth congress since the foundation of the party in 1996. The event was witnessed by the former Vice President Aja Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang and Hon Mama Kandeh the party leader and secretary General of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC)
