The Statistician General told members of the PEC , “the budget approved by for the Bureau annually have not been adequate for the implementation of its planned activity for the year, this resulted to some activities not being implemented creating data gaps in the Statistics system” he explained.
The Gambia Bureau of Statistics on Monday presented its activity report and financial Statement for the year ended 2015 /2016 before the National Assembly Select Committee on Public Enterprise at the Assembly chambers in Banjul.
Hon. Halifa Sallah Chairman of the Public Enterprise Committee whilst opening the session referred members to the Public Enterprise Act which established public enterprise to be able to pay dividend to government, promote the national objective and generate employment and to be a good employer.
Nyakassi Sanyang the Statistician General GBoS inform the committee that during year under review, GBoS continued with its routine activities as well as implement activities related to ad hoc studies.
He told members of PEC that this routine activities undertaken included data collection, processing, analysis and dissemination of statistics on consumer prices, producer price, national account, and trade and transport.
“With the ad hoc studies, the Bureau continued implementing the Integrated Household Survey which started in the second quarter of 2015” Sanyang noted
He also highlighted the objectives of GBoS which is to effectively coordinate the National Statistics System (NSS) such that it will adequately respond to the statistical data needs of government and other users
The Statistician General further reiterated on the Constraints that the institution is enduring as well as made recommendations for it “the budget approved by for the Bureau annually have not been adequate for the the implementation of it’s planned activity for the year, this resulted to some activities not being implemented creating data gaps in the Statistics system” he explained
Recommending that in as much as government appreciates the importance of statistics, it should further appreciate the fact that production of real-time realible statistics data is costly and should endevor to meet such costs.
Malick Jobe, the Accountant of GBoS, stated that the opening balance as at January 1st(loan) was D4,971,492.30 in 2015 and D69,761.29 adding that the government subvention in 2015 was D30,243,450.00 and D29,616.01 whiles in 2016 the total income for 2015 was D39,694,800.26 and D46,768,312.45.
The Auditor General’s report was read by Almameh Mankajang, who stated that in their opinion, the financial statement and related notes set out presents fairly in all material respect the consolidated statement of recent and payments of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics for the year ended 2015/2016.
