Reports received by this medium indicate that there was an armed robbery on Monday 9th April 2018, between the hours of 10 and 10.30 am at the Jah Oil Petrol Station at the roundabout linking Brikama and Kembuje.

According to reports, the gunman was a lone robber who came to the Petrol Station on a motorbike, armed with an AK47 assault rifle and began firing in the air; that the panic stricken workers at the Station decided to take cover and save themselves; that this was the time the lone robber took advantage of the situation to loot the two day earnings of the Station and make his escape; that he was able to gunpoint a taxi driver and board his vehicle to make his escape.

This medium made frantic efforts to talk to the Station Manager who goes by the name Astou, to no avail. A family member of the proprietor was also contacted but the person declined to comment.

When contacted to shed light on the matter, ASP David Kujabi, the PRO of the Gambia Police Force (GPF), confirmed the story. PRO Kujabi told this medium that the armed robbery took place and was carried out by a lone gunman. However, PRO Kujabi could not confirm whether the lone gunman was apprehended or not, when asked the question, but confirmed to this medium that joint efforts by GAF and the GPF was ongoing in order to apprehend him.

"Many Gambians took to social media to express dissatisfaction towards the manner of weak policing of people and businesses, in the country."

The Police are stretched with resources and effective manpower problems and training I wish the officers the best in the BIG task ahead of them.

The Inspector General of the Gambia Police Force (IGP) on Wednesday 11th April 2018, announced that Check Point Policing will resume across the country, amid Crime escalation.

In a Press statement sent to media houses, the Office of the IGP said: “Following the recent string of violent crimes which include the armed robbery at the Jah Oil Fuel Station in Brikama New Town, the Office of the Inspector General of Police wishes to make it clear, that such acts of lawlessness will not be condoned and it has resolved to use all its legal powers to ensure strict compliance of the Law.”

The statement added that ‘‘henceforth, all check points will be mounted and 24 hours patrols will be conducted across the length and breadth of the country. The Gambia Police Force will use all resources at its disposal, to hunt down criminals wherever they may be, and bring them to book.”

The Office of the IGP has urged for the cooperation of the public, in providing timely information that would help in their drive.

“Policing is a collective responsibility and all are urged to join the fight to rid The Gambia of criminals and hoodlums,” the statement continued.

The Gambia used to have check points across the country until the advent of the Barrow administration, when human rights advocates called on the Government to dismantle them.

The right defenders claimed that check points affect the freedom of movement of people as well as encourages corruption.

However, less than a year after dismantling the check points, the country has recorded an unprecedented rise of criminal activity including armed robbery, killings and increase theft both in the urban and rural areas.

Many Gambians took to social media to express dissatisfaction towards the manner of weak policing of people and businesses, in the country.

The lone armed robber who raided the Jah Oil Petrol station in Brikama on Monday 9th April 2018 and making off with millions, is still at large.

Astou Ceesay, the Manager of the petrol station, said the lone armed robber is still at large and joint security investigators are high on his heels. Astou narrated to this reporter that the man had a bag and wore dark-glasses; that he arrived at the petrol station at around 10:00 am while she was with the cashier, counting the cash.

She explained: ‘‘He entered and closed the door and then he opened his bag and pull-out an AK47 rifle, threatening us to put the money inside his bag or else. Before saying a word, he fired a bullet on the wall. We have no other option but to put the money in his bag. He spoke in English. He went with different kinds of currencies such as D8, 7016; FCA 20, 000 and another FCA 8,500; including some Euros. The money taken away is about D2million. There was an extra amount saved in a box, which I didn’t know the figure,’’ she said.

According to the manager, the armed man told her that they were three in number and the others were waiting around the petrol station in a taxi.

‘‘What surprised me is that he knew my name and called me, saying if I want to live long, I shouldn’t scream or he will shoot me. He took my brother’s smart-phone that was being plugged in to charge,’’ she said.

Scared to death of being killed, Ceesay explained they later saw the man on his motorbike but it refused to light; that this was the time they started shouting and calling him thief; that residents and workers within the area came out to chase him but he fired live bullets in the air, to scare them away.

She said: ‘‘He was stoned by the crowd and he fell. But suddenly, a speedy taxi arrived and picked him up and they made their escape. We reported the matter to Brikama police station. Both the Military and Police visited the scene. The information we’ve gathered for now is that security officers are searching for him in the bush. This attack really affects us and our customers because some people are still panicked by events.’’

Astou however called on the authorities to develop the security system within the country for the safety of all Gambians. ‘‘For an armed gunman to operate and attack a business entity in broad daylight and run away with millions without being caught up to now, in this country, is really scary,’’ she said.
