In the nearest future, The Gambia will join the rest of the world to use ballot papers instead of ballot tokens and marble during elections.

Alieu Momar Njie, chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) disclosed that this plan is already in offing as he speaks at the opening of the GPU’s organised weeklong Civic Education and Election Reporting at Tango’s conference hall on Saturday.

He stated that with the new found freedom, The Gambia cannot continue using the same old method of voting “by using the ballot drums.”

He admitted that use of ballot drums during the last Presidential and National Assembly Elections, IEC had series of problems as it was not easy to carry them around to drop and collect them from the polling boots.

“That’s why we are now planning to move from this old archaic system of using the ballot drums because in some constituency we have 9 candidates and in a polling station physically and practically it is not easy to carry around all these drum into each polling booth. Especially that we have to manufacture over two thousands ballot drums within two weeks just to accommodate the numbers of candidates for the elections;” he lamented
