We just received information here at our NEWS DESK about the ARREST and DETENTION of the Director General of Gambia’s State Intelligence Services (SIS). Mr. Sowe has been taken into custody, according to sources reaching us. It’s a developing breaking news story. Our reporters on the ground are following the story. We will keep you posted with developments it unfolds.
This followed, a massive purging of the security agencies in the country. IGP Yankuba Sonko and his Deputy have both been removed. Sonko, was redeployed to the Foreign Service. He has since been replaced by Landing Kinteh, a career police prosecutor. Similar changes were made at the Immigration Department. DG Pa Mboob and his Deputy Landing Jarju, have been replaced. Buba Sanyang, a former Director of the Department is the new boss at the Immigration.
Mr. Ousman Sowe recently had a go with one of his agents Baboucarr Badjie, which led to the arrest of Mr. Badjie. Badjie, who is the agency’s Legal Officer, was accused of leaking state secrets to the Freedom Newspaper, a charge Badjie vehemently denied. He accused Mr. Sowe of abuse of office, abdication of duties, nepotism among other allegations in a petition he wrote to president Barrow.
The SIS Media and Public Affairs Division could not be reached for comment.

Posted - 28 Jun 2017 : 15:26:55 Its a funny old world. A few years ago I met Yankuba Sonko in Manchester and had a chat with him. He said he was a senior Police officer who was on a training course in the UK. He seemed like a nice guy but didn't say he was connected with the security agency. I note that according to Freedom newspaper he has not been arrested or charged with any crime. |

The legal adviser of the National Intelligence Agency, now renamed State Intelligence Services, Boubacarr Badjie, is still reporting on bail at Kairaba Police Station although he is yet to be charged with any crime.
At the presidential spokesperson’s maiden press conference last week, a question regarding allegations contained in the petition against the director general of the SIS by Mr Badjie was quizzed but Mrs Amie Bojang-Sisoho did not give much information regarding the case.
“All matters of reforms are being reviewed; including staff audits to ascertain who is on the government pay roll are being determined. Once it is done, we will get the public informed,” she said.
Badjie was arrested by the police on the 9th June 2017 and detained at the Kairaba Police Station for three days; he was released on 12 June at around 4:30pm.
He was served with an interdiction notice from the Personnel Management Office (PMO) on the allegations of leaking official secrets to the public and violating work ethics of the intelligence agency.
However, Badjie maintained his innocence and claimed that the new DG was reluctant to implement reforms as demanded by the new government.
He also alleged that DG Sowe was tampering with evidence of torture that took place at the agency, and also reluctant to handover suspects in the killing of Solo Sandeng for prosecution.
He was granted police bail of D50,000 with two male sureties. He reports on bail twice a week since then. Author: Sanna Camara
