HOW COULD THE PRESIDENT BE A SPOKESPERSON OF DETAINED ASYLUM SEEKERS WHEN PARENTS AND OTHERS ARE STILL DETAINED WITHOUT TRIAL IN THE GAMBIA?

Foroyaa Editorial: Published on June 13, 2015

The families of detainees are still appealing through Foroyaa for the release of their loved ones. They still cannot understand what the government wants. Detention without trial is degrading and inhumane treatment. It is a crime against humanity. Needless to say when every plight of African detainees in Europe is mentioned many of us wonder whether the mind of the president does reflect on the situation of the detainees in the Gambia. It is simple common sense that preachers of justice for Africans should be role models in protecting the rights of each African.

The following are still held in detention without trial: NEMA Project Director, Momodou Gassama detained for 17 days now, Haruna Gassama, President of the CRR Rice Grower’s Cooperative 3 months now, Lamin Cham a Music promoter and disc jockey (DJ) one week, Sanna Fadera a student at the UTG also attached to the Bio Chemist Laboratory of the GFA 18 days now, Seedy Jaiteh a former Human Resource Director of Gamcel 9 months, Meta Njie 4 months, Alhaji Kebba Touray, sick and bed-ridden also businessman 4 months now, Mr Bai Jobe Njie, 4 months, 13 year old Yusupha Lowe and his 19 year old uncle Pa Alieu Lowe 4 months, Essa Bojang and Fatou, 4 months, Mr Ambu Drammeh, a mentally ill, Mr Mambury Njie, a former Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, 8 months and Lieutenant Colonel Solo Bojang, erstwhile Commander of the State Guards battalion at Kanilai.

We therefore hope that justice would be done at home before preaching for justice to be done abroad. A person who has not committed a crime should neither be arrested nor detained without trial.
