Mr. Sait Matty Jaw, an administrative Assistant at the University ofSait Matty Jaw The Gambia (UTG), together with Seth Yaw Kandeh and Olufemi Erinle Titus, Ghanaian and Nigerian nationals, respectively, were yesterday, Wednesday, 10 December, 2014 arraigned and remanded by Magistrate.

"He also submitted that bail is at the discretion of the court but should be exercise judicially and judiciously.
At this juncture, the trial magistrate adjourned the case to 24th December 2014 for ruling on the bail application and consequently ordered the accused to be remanded."

IS ACADEMIC FREEDOM UNDER THREAT? THE ATTORNEY GENERAL SHOULD TAKE NOTE

The appearance of accused persons in court in relation to research and data collection raises questions regarding Academic freedom.
Multinational and multi disciplinary research initiatives are the only avenues to promote knowledge production in our sub-region. The University of The Gambia is an emerging institution whose administrators, lecturers and students need exposure. This is inconceivable without developing partnerships with established research institutions and foundations.
Research is the foundation for knowledge production. No nation could survive without thinkers. No thinkers could deliver without academic
freedom. Section 25 of the Constitution states that, “Every person shall have the right to freedom of thought ………..which shall include academic freedom” We hope that the authorities would give relevance to the existence of ECOWAS and the importance of multinational collaborations in all endeavours. In some cases justice is best served by withdrawing charges against people who have no intention to violate the Laws of a country. |
