The President of the Republic has disclosed plans by government to conduct a survey exercise that will draw maps and give names to the over 300 islands sitting along The River Gambia territories.
Speaking to a corps of local and international press during an interview at the Kayai Island in the Central River Region, H.E Sheikh Prof Alh Dr Yahya Jammeh, said only seven out of this number have been given names.

“By next year we will conduct an aerial survey to map and give name to all the islands,” he reaffirmed, while singling out the Kayai Island as “one of the best places one can find in The Gambia”.

The Kayai Island is said to have a large population of hippos, and thick as it is, the all-green forest area is also a natural habitat for many other wild animals such as crocodiles, snakes and even devils among others.

Travelling to the Island, it was observed that the river is divided into six main junctions, referred to in Mandinka as ‘Daewooro’ (meaning in English six junctions). Kayai is the biggest Island that has another small Island within it. The potentials of this Island are enormous in that it can be used for both eco-tourism and agricultural production.

Local residents said the Island had until now been a no-go-area for humans given the presence of wild animals and the presumed presence of spiritual forces. They were however, amazed that that barrier was broken by President Jammeh after he started vising the Island.

In fact it was understood that attempts by the President to send surveyors to this Island had failed three times before they finally made it.

Meanwhile, the interview was granted as part of the second leg harvest tour of Vision 2016 farms in CRR.

I suspect that H.E.'s "Advisers" have correctly identified possible 300 "Development " opportunities for a private retreat,or maybe an hotel,Lodge,Eco guided visits for tourists from some of the world's richest countries, in the sun of The Smiling Coast The Gambia,SUPER IDEA, why not ? Locals are not interested at all because,"Local residents said the Island had until now been a no-go-area for humans given the presence of wild animals and the presumed presence of spiritual forces." If Gambia is going to become a place of the 21st Century projects like this must be considered.
