Nasiru Deen Islamic School honours President Jammeh
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
The Gambian leader has received another award, this time from the Nasiru Deen Islamic School based in Garawol Village in the Kontora District of the Upper River Region (URR).

The award is in appreciation of His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh’s strong and outstanding stance in the promotion of Islam in the country. It is also in recognition of the recent title of ‘Nasiru Deen’ conferred on him by officials of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (SIC). The award was received on behalf of the Gambian leader by the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy at State House on Friday.

Presenting the award, Alhagie Youcasi Sawaneh, the president and initiator of the school thanked the Gambia leader through the vice president and all the Cabinet ministers. He explained that their decision to award the president was as a result of his outstanding support to Islam. He added that his institution also felt it prudent to award the Gambian leader as he has championed numerous development initiatives in the country. Sawaneh also emphasised the importance of education.

He said: “Anyone who educates his or her child, is like you fed 10,000 hungry people, or sheltered orphans.” Alhaji Musa Drammeh, representing ‘Sumpu Do Khatti’ an umbrella body of all Sarahulleh organisations in the country, thanked the community of Garawal for the move. He equally thanked the Gambian leader through Dr Njie-Saidy. Drammeh stated that the Nasiru Deen title is among series of accolades President Jammeh received in recognition of his pragmatic and exemplary leadership and more importantly his support for Islam. He then prayed to Allah to continue to bless this great nation as well as the leadership of the country. He explained that the school was established some years ago and together with the Tallinding Islamic Institute Union they came to a consensus agreement to name it ‘Nasiru Deen’. “Last year, officials of the SIC conferred this same title on the Gambian leader based on his qualities and as a coincidence, the school authorities decided to award the Gambian leader, which I think is a welcome move,” he added.

Imam Sheriff Badjan, the vice president of SIC thanked the community of Garawol on behalf of the general secretariat of SIC for the move, describing it as positive. He also thanked the SIC for the wonderful work they are doing in the country, ranging from education to other areas. He then disclosed plans to introduce the revised Islamic syllabus and learning materials, which they want to distribute among the schools in the country. Imam Badjan finally thanked President Jammeh for his development efforts and commended the Sarahuleh community for their proactive stance in the Islamic religion.

Oustass Ousainou Touray, head, Madarassa education at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education described the day as an important one for the Education Ministry, adding that they have toured all the five regions of the country to train Islamic teachers. He equally commended President Jammeh, citing his sponsorship of the Qura’nic Recitation Competition, hajj packages, Ramadan gifts as well as building of mosques as clear examples of his love for Islam. Saikou Suso, the National Assembly member for Kontora Constituency thanked President Jammeh for creating a conducive environment for development to take place in the country. The Kantora NAM also thanked the school authorities for the move. He stressed that the Gambian leader is not only supporting the Islamic religion but all spheres of development. He recalled that the president even promised to appoint Islamic students to key government positions, something that never happened before.

For her part, VP Njie-Saidy thanked the community of Garawol on behalf of the president, adding that he cannot reward Kontora District enough, as the people of this constituency have for long been strong supporters of the APRC. She lauded the officials in charge of Madarasa education in the country, describing their decision to include science and technology in their teaching syllabus as a move in the right direction. She explained that Islam is a true religion as it encompasses all values of human endeavour. She then cited the president’s benevolence to his fellow countrymen, ranging from Ramadan gifts to support to the needy, among a host of others, all reasons that earned him the ‘Nasiru Deen’ title. She made it clear that the Islamic religion also preaches discipline especially among young people and called on the elders to nurture such principles in the young ones.

Nasiru Deen Islamic School was established in 1990. The school is among institutions under the guidance of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council and has a current enrollment of over 500 pupils.
