I am hearing some reports that some Iman's and the people at their Mosques are being prevented from going to pray. The detail is very sketchy at the moment on Twitter.
Does anyone in Gambia know what is happening and why?

Sheikh Muheideen Hydara, Khaliph General of Dasilami Sanajorr

1. FOROYAA BURNING ISSUES NEWS AND EDITORIAL;

2. The triumph of Sheikh Muheideen Hydara over evil

The octogenarian Muslim cleric, Sheikh Muheideen Hydara, Khaliph General of Dasilami Sanajorr, has been released from police custody after defying the Fatwa issued by the Gambian dictator banning the Khaliph and other Imams from Eid prayers signalling the end of Ramadan.

The 80 year plus retired religious leader was arrested because he led his followers in prayers on a day the Gambian dictator has prohibited anyone from praying.

Since his arrest on Tuesday, he was being shuttled from one police station to another - a time honored tactic utilized by the regime - to intimidate the frail Muslim cleric into submission. When he refused to apologize neither to the dictator nor to the Islamic Council, he was transferred to another police station in appears to be a final attempt to "break the frail old man" as described by an eyewitness. ......The Khalif was finally released on bail and released to the custody of his loved ones. The revered cleric is to report to the authorities next week after being in the hands of the regime three days........Full Report By Blogger Sidi Sanneh

Toubab 1020 NOTE:.....BUT LATER CONFIRM IN FOROYAA NEWSPAPER BURNING ISSUES REPORT Security forces prevent Muslims from praying In response to the president’s announcement FORWARDED ABOVE FOR THESE FACTS QUOTED FROM THE FOROYAA REPORT;
  • "The president in his statement at the meeting broadcast by the state owned GRTS said Muslims in the country should pray together on a date declared by the authorities whom he said would keep the peace. He alluded to happenings elsewhere and asserted that that must be avoided at all cost. He vowed by swearing to the Qur’an that any village or community in the Greater Banjul Area that celebrates the Eid on Tuesday would suffer the consequences. He said he has given an order to the Interior Minister to arrest anyone who converges at praying grounds.

Interestingly enough, by 10pm July 28th, the GRTS announcement informed that the provincial regions, ie. LRR, NBR, CRR and URR were excluded from the ban and are therefore allowed to pray on Tuesday, July 29, 2014; that the WCR, KM and Banjul are not allowed to perform the Eid prayers and that anyone who does so would be dealt with according to law.

This was confirmed by the members of the Supreme Islamic Council led by Imam Fatty who called on the faithful to cooperate with the security forces and refrain from praying today, July 29."

FOROYAA NEWSPAPER REPORTS: Published July 30, 2014

President Jammeh and the Muslim elders

1. Banjul Muslim Elders Meet President Jammeh after Eid Prayers.

The president threatened to deal with anyone who decides to pray on the next day. He said since Saudi Arabia was observing the Koriteh feast on that day, everybody in the country should do the same.......Full report

2. Security forces prevent Muslims from praying In response to the president’s announcement

A large number of Muslims in diverse places in the Greater Banjul Area were prevented by the security forces from praying on Tuesday, 29 July 2014, to mark the end of the Ramadan month of fasting. This development came on the heels of the announcement made by President Yahya Jammeh at state house on Monday, 28 July, during his meeting with the Banjul Muslim elders after the Eid el Fitr prayers and in which he asked the security to prevent anyone from praying the following day.

This Foroyaa reporter was out and about to find out whether there were some Muslims who wanted to pray on Tuesday and whether they proceeded with it and had visited Bakau, Brufut and Basori in the Western Region.

Visiting the mosque of the Mouride brotherhood in Bakau New Town yesterday, this reporter found a huge presence of the security forces consisting of the police and Immigration personnel who even outnumbered the former. The security however did not allow them to proceed with the Eid prayers.

Muhammed Sarr, one of those who came to pray, expressed his displeasure with the decision to prevent them from observing the Eid on that day and described the move as unprecedented as far as he is concerned.

“I am forty five years now but have never witnessed such a thing in my life: the state preventing Muslims to pray?” he exclaimed.

He said the country has been very tolerant to religious beliefs but added that what is happening now is alarming.

Mr. Sarr said people should be free to choose not to follow Mecca regarding the sighting of the moon. “The Supreme Islamic Council is free to follow Mecca and other Muslims are also at liberty to do what they think is right. There shouldn’t be any compulsion,” he said.

Alieu Njie, a resident of Brufut, said he could not pray due to the order given that they should not be allowed to pray.” Some people in Brufut did pray on Monday, but for some of us since we did not see the moon we have decided to fast and pray the next day and there is no harm in this. What we have learnt is that we should pray or fast based on the sighting of the moon but not to follow Mecca,” said Njie.

He said they are being prevented from praying in the name of maintaining unity but that this is what is dividing Muslims,” he argued.

He called on the authorities to refrain from interfering in the peaceful religious beliefs of people.

When this reporter visited Basori in Kombo East, he was told by the village Alkalo, Lamin Mabintang Jabang, that they intended to pray yesterday (Tuesday) but decided not to do so because of the president’s announcement. He said police officers came to his village in the morning but that no one was arrested because they did not pray.

Some of the villagers expressed disappointment and displeasure for being unable to mark the feast with prayers after fasting for 29 days. They said religion should be free from political interference as there is no compulsion in it. They called on the Supreme Islamic Council to dialogue with the Muslims.

This reporter was informed by sources that Muslims in places such as Bwiam, Darsilami, Jiramba, Kankuntu and Sangajor Darsilami in the Western Region did not observe the Eid because of the announcement preventing them to pray.

The president in his statement at the meeting broadcast by the state owned GRTS said Muslims in the country should pray together on a date declared by the authorities whom he said would keep the peace.

This was confirmed by the members of the Supreme Islamic Council led by Imam Fatty who called on the faithful to cooperate with the security forces and refrain from praying today, July 29.

3. THE BEST GOVERNMENT TO RELIGION IS ONE THAT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH PEOPLE’S BELIEFS AND PRACTICES

The subject of right and wrong, blessing and sin in religion is not a state matter. The wages of doing wrong and sin is established by the religion and not by the state. In theist religion sin and wrong doing is punished by god.

When a state takes it upon itself to intervene to determine what is wrong and right in religious practice, it ends up playing god on earth by forcing people to do things that are against their free will and beliefs. Faith without free will to hold and practice one’s belief is void. This causes alienation and increases sectarian divides.......Full Editorial

1.THE FOLLOWING REPORT OR PUBLICATION IS COVERED IN SOCIAL MEDIA ALLEGEDLY FROM THE POINT NEWSPAPER BUT I CANNOT TRACE IT TO VERIFY ITS AUTHENTICITY FROM THE POINT OR GRTS BUT LATER CONFIRM IN FOROYAA NEWSPAPER REPORT BELOW ON NEXT POST;
Representatives of the GSIC and Police High Command later came on national television to clarify the issue to the nation.

It was announced that Muslims resident in the Lower River, North Bank, Central River and Upper River regions of the country are allowed to attend and perform the Eid al Fitr congregational prayer on Tuesday morning in these provincial areas.

They will be allowed to do so, because it was likely that due to local communication difficulties, they did not hear the radio and television announcement put out by the GSIC for Muslims in The Gambia to pray on Monday 28 July.

However, Muslims in Banjul, the Kanifing Municipality and West Coast Region must not congregate to perform the Eid prayer on Tuesday, as they were aware of the announcement by the GSIC that Monday was the day for the Eid prayer in The Gambia.

It was further stated that henceforth, all Muslims resident in the country must perform the Eid prayers – the Eid al Fitr and Eid ul Adha – on the same day in each year, as the GSIC will specify in a public announcement, for such congregational prayer to be held in the country.

2. Toubab 1020 I appreciate your concerns. You did not understand my viewpoints because you cannot translate (our local vernacular) or properly understand PRESIDENT JAMMEH'S THREATS, RUDE STATEMENTS AND SLURS WITH OUR ELDERS (COMMUNITY LEADERS) VERBATIM; NOR UNDERSTAND OUR RELIGION, CULTURE (HERITAGE) AND/OR TRADITIONS. Also others may or may not appreciate them because he does not have any authority to issue a FATWA to extent of swearing to execute it, condemning the Imams and dictating Supreme Islamic Council

Thank you for that. What is 'ndigal'? What do Gambian's think about this report? Is it good the President is being so firm on this matter? Or should it be left to Iman's to decide?

President Jammeh forbids Eid prayer on Tuesday
The Point: Published on Wednesday, July 30, 2014

“Let me make it very clear [that] here in this country, we go by Suratul Kafiruna. We leave judgment to the Almighty Allah”, President Yahya Jammeh declared at State House in Banjul.

The occasion was the traditional meeting with Muslim elders after the Eid al Fitr congregational prayer on Monday.

President Jammeh’ s audience included members of the government, members of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC), members of the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders and the Imam Ratib of Banjul, as well as other imams and Muslim elders in the Greater Banjul area.

The event was broadcast on national radio and television.

He spoke in reaction to comments made at the meeting by various speakers, among them the president of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, Alhaji Muhammdu Lamin Touray.

Imam Touray told the meeting that unlike in past years when the matter was affected by controversy, this year the moon was sighted in The Gambia in several places (to mark the beginning as well as the end of Ramadan), and that except for a few imams who chose not to do so, the vast majority of imams and Muslims performed the Eid prayer on Monday.

This happened to be the days when Muslims in Saudi Arabia also started and ended fasting during this year’s Ramadan, Imam Touray added.

Jammeh said at Monday’s meeting: “I would not allow people to divide this land, because it is also in the Quran that we should not allow anybody to divide Islam or Muslims.

“Those who say they would not pray as they are waiting for ndigal; they would not be allowed to pray here; let them go where their serigne is and pray there; tomorrow (Tueday) nobody will be allowed to pray here. I am the ruler in this country”.

He went on to give instructions to the Local Government minister, who was asked to instruct governors, chiefs and alkalos to dismiss the imams who failed to pray on Monday from their mosques, “or I will close down the mosque”.

The minister of the Interior was also instructed at the meeting to make sure nobody performed the Eid congregational prayer on Tuesday.

Police commissioner Ceesay in charge of Kanifing Division on behalf of the Police High Command announced that the police will be out to carry out the instruction for Muslims not to pray on Tuesday morning in the specified areas of the country, and asked for public cooperation.

President Jammeh, during the meeting in Banjul with the country’s Muslim elders, went on as follows:

“W are followers of what the Quran and the sunnah of the Prophet prescribe. If you are a true Muslim, there is no edict to wait for, beyond that from Saudi Arabia.

“Those who wait for other ndigal could as well go to pray there, but nobody will pray tomorrow in Gambia”, and that whoever goes against this order will face the consequences.

He added that nobody will be allowed to use politics to divide Muslims or create divisions in Islam. “Creating partners to Allah is unIslamic and will not take root here; as it is not the Islamic religion; the ndigal is not for this country; in this country, we are practising pure Islam; whether one likes it or not”.

Jammeh said Islam is not compatible with anarchy; and sowing division will also not be tolerated.

“If you do not accept the GSIC, that is your problem. However, Maccah (Saudi Arabia) prayed today (Monday), and we have no model to follow other than Maccah…

He added that those who live in The Gambia must follow the pure Islam or leave the country, as there will be “no compromise” on this policy.

Meanwhile, our reporters were out to monitor the situation, and there were no reports of a congregational prayer in the areas where such prayer was proscribed.

Twitter is here everywhere in every country so everybody can know everything about everyone and what is happening everywhere on the globe, tweets are being posted on many things of course,BUT,I suggest that tweets can be magnified and misinterpreted and made into giant rumours,(for whatever reason) that MAY be based on inaccurate information,we all know that Gambians LOVE to chat a lot about anything and everybody that is the way of the Gambian population this may have happened in this case, who knows,I don't,Gambiabev,do you ? I would prefer to have reliable information from a reliable named source before I make up MY OWN MIND as to the validity of a tweet.
