Seems a great deal of money to reinstate no more than 150 metres of roadway into the main Gilly gilly and minibus garage in Brikama, the pressure to reinstate this abysmally maintained bit of road must have been very great to fix the road before the rainy season starts if it is not fixed then a good deal of Gambia would grind to a halt, many workers travel to offices in Banjul and gilly Gillys connect with neighboring countries as well serving places up country in Gambia.

There is me wittering on about repairing the entrance road,I entirely missed this bit "provide pavements" so NO ROAD REPAIR ? how much? D912, 459.72

EXTRACT FROM SPEECH by Yusupha Manneh,
The local governance administrator also expressed his commitment to enhance the area’s infrastructure, especially within the Brikama metropolis. As part of efforts to achieve this, he revealed that a total sum of D912, 459.72 has been approved and paid to The Gambia Agency for Public Works (GAMWORKS) to provide pavements to the entrance road to the Brikama Car Park, which has been left dilapidated for several years.

“My focus is to see that the Council is viable and is able to deliver efficient service to her taxpayers. This is part of my vision and mission,” he said.

Foroyaa has investigated and come up with the GNTSC version of events in relation to the problem, read it and see which version you think is more credable and wait for...............

"This reporter will be meeting with the BAC PRO today to hear their version of the issue."

Snippet:

"He said they could not pay for the service at once because the cheque was only accessed after three months and which coincided with the commencement of the rains. He added that BAC decided to take out some amount in order to temporarily fix the road until after the rains when they will start the construction of a permanent road."

Brikama Car Park drivers call for a permanent road GNTSC Official Replies

Drivers who use the Brikama Car Park to collect and discharge passengersBrikama Car Park are calling on the local government authority to construct a quality and long lasting road than spending resources on temporal measures.

They raised this concern yesterday, 3 September, 2014 when this reporter visited the Brikama car park and the road linking it to the main road which drivers said is in a poor state and needing urgent re-construction. They contended that a permanent solution is what is needed with a quality road constructed rather than filling pot holes or spreading laterite on it as a temporary measure. They also questioned why the Brikama Area Council (BAC) should spend money just for a temporal measure.

One of the drivers who prefers anonymity, said the road has been in such a bad condition for so quite a long time now and that the Area Council should once and for all come up with a permanent solution to fix it. “We are paying road tax and other dues and deserve good roads in return,” he said.

He added that the poor condition of the roads is costly as it leads to frequent breakdowns and repairs of their vehicles. “We cannot continue doing this every year by fixing here and there when the rain starts,” he complained.

Another driver raised the issue of the lack of space in the car park, adding that the place is too tight. “Because of this, many passengers wait for the vehicles on the roadside especially when it is raining as the place turns into a no go area due to its tightness and muddy nature,” he said.

He added that this is not even allowed by the police who would ask them to go to the car park.

Responding to the concerns raised by the drivers, Mr. Ansumana Ceesay, the Vice Chairperson of the Gambia National Transport Control Service (GNTCS)-Brikama Branch, said the Brikama car park was built since 2004 and that the road in question started getting damaged only three years ago. He said since then both the Council and the car park management under GNTSC have been spending huge amounts of money in reconstructing the areas that are damaged on a temporal basis. He said the road needs to be made with concrete to ensure a permanent solution.

Mr. Ceesay said before the rainy season this year, the BAC had received nearly a million dalasi from GAMWORKS to work on the road. He said they could not pay for the service at once because the cheque was only accessed after three months and which coincided with the commencement of the rains. He added that BAC decided to take out some amount in order to temporarily fix the road until after the rains when they will start the construction of a permanent road.

On the issue of the lack of space, the Brikamam Branch GNTSC Vice Chairperson denied that the place is tight. He blamed the drivers who ply the Serekunda – Brikama route for not following the rules of the garage.

“We provide different sections in the garage for the different locations. All the others are following this order but the vehicles from Serekunda are not following this procedure. They just come straight and pass through without joining the queue and thus causing blockage in the garage,” said Ceesay.

This reporter will be meeting with the BAC PRO today to hear their version of the issue.

Drivers lament poor road linking Brikama Garage
africa » gambia
Thursday, September 04, 2014

The grieved commercial vehicle drivers in Brikama Garage have lamented the poor condition of the road that links Castle and the garage.

According to the aggrieved drivers, the 25m road that stretches from the garage to the castle petrol station had been in bad condition for more than 3 years and it had become an economic loss to the drivers that ply the road.

According to a driver who wants to remain anonymous, the road had been a headache for them for more than 3 years and nothing had been done about it.

He said that during the dry season the road becomes unbearable and in rainy season it floods and becomes worst and create a hard passage for the vehicles.

He also said there was no vehicle at the garage that did not pay a butut every day, asking where the money is being used.

They suffer everyday and spend more money on maintenance because the vehicles could not take it, he lamented.

Another driver who also wishes to remain anonymous said they contribute money for the upkeep of the road each day and “those who collect the money give it to the area council so it is the responsibility of the area council to make sure the roads they use is in good shape”.

He said he had spent D3,000 on his vehicle due to the problems of the road.

He said every year the area council would tell them that the road would be rehabilitated after the rainy season but that had never happened, he stated.

Responding to drivers’ complaints, Ansumana Ceesay, vice president of the National Transport Control Association Brikama Chapter, said he had been in the Brikama Garage since 1994 and since the establishment of the garage, the road had been in the same condition for three years.

He said that in these three years they had spent a lot of money to maintain the road in good condition but it was still getting bad.

He added that they all put in money to upkeep the road every year, adding that this year the area council went to meet Gamworks and paid a cheque for more than D900, 000 but they said it had taken them 3 months and that the work would be carried out after August.

According to him, “since the time is far for them and the drivers are suffering”, they decided to look for a contractor to rehabilitate the road temporarily to enable easy passage for drivers.

He said they gave D250,000 to the contractor and he sealed the holes on the road with rocks but it did not last long due to the heavy downpour of rain.

He said the BAC is trying hard to bring the road problem under control and by the end of September they would start working on the road with Gamworks.

Meanwhile, this reporter went to BAC to hear their own side of the issue but the PRO’s office was closed and when called on phone he said he would reply later.
