We sadly announce the passing of Mrs Nogoi Njie of Kombo Mandinari, a devoted member of the United Democratic Party and a participant in the April 14th protest alongside Solo Sandeng. Her involvement led to her imprisonment until 2016.

Reshaping this poem inspired by Nogoi Njie and dedicated to her. I wanted to meet her one day, serenade her poetically and thank her. May she rest in perfect peace and be rewarded for her sacrifices.
……………….

This poem is inspired by the spirit of, and dedicated to, NOGOI NJIE. Witness after witness testify to her courage and bravery when she and her colleagues were unlawfully detailed and tortured. One of many unsung heroines who deserve to be celebrated and recognized!

The lioness roared - a poem

The lioness roared
Staring into the barrel of the gun
Zombies playing demigods for fun
After all senses are gone
Before the setting of the dark sun

The lioness roared
Not showing an iota of fear
Not knowing if the end was near
Will the roar be drowned?
To be replaced by the callous frown?

Will the zombie cock the gun?
Eager to bring another one down
Ready to kill
Yet she dared torture and death

Rooted like the baobab tree
Her soul set free
Heart beating fast
Adrenaline flowing past
Every vein surging in rage
Exorcising the evil burst

The lioness roared
In spite of the looming outburst
Ready to pay the ultimate price
In a very lonely place

Zombies spitting fire on dying husk
Turned thus
By heartless zombies
To spread the inferno of fear
Broadcasting distressing howls
To disparage the human spirit

Fanning the stench of death
Dressed in red, with shackles
And an arsenal of torture gadgets
Creeping under the skin
The cursed earthly devil of death
Sharpening horns
To inflict painful rapture
Executing the final command

Defiant she stood, smelling death
The unbreakable human spirit
Standing tall above the fray
Not budging before the last prayer

The explosion after the stealth
That always eludes the rader belt
Of dictators and tyrants
For centuries in defiance
Blinded by power, they never learn

The roulette of destiny
Spirit refusing to succumb, fierce.
Crossing the line of fear
Into spiritual freedom
That numbs the senses
Takes the pain of torture away

Another howl, another roar
The lioness that showed no fear
At the doorstep of death
Is one worth celebrating

She roared back at the agents of death
She made the gun swallow its bullet
Roar lioness roar
Shake the earth
Bend time
Along the spiral turns
For you will not be forgotten

From Solo Sandeng Foundation

With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we mourn the passing of Aja Nogoi Njie, a remarkable soul and victim (of torture) who departed from us at 3 AM today at West Field Clinic. Nogoi's journey was one of courage and unwavering resilience, marked by her unyielding spirit in the face of adversity.

Nogoi bore the weight of feeble health, a silent testament to the harrowing ordeal she endured in 2016 at the hands of heartless N.I.A operatives. Her indomitable spirit remained unbroken even as she battled the physical and emotional scars of that fateful day.

A devoted businesswoman, Nogoi was not content to merely exist in the shadows of life. She fearlessly championed a noble cause, leading the charge in the April 14, 2016 peaceful protest—a pivotal moment in our nation's history. Her unwavering dedication to this patriotic endeavor played a pivotal role in bringing an end to our country's dictatorial era.

As we bid farewell to a courageous trailblazer, let us remember Aja Nogoi Njie for her extraordinary contributions to our nation's journey towards justice, freedom, and democracy. May her soul Rest In Peace, and may her legacy of bravery and commitment continue to inspire us all.

Adieu Aunty Nogoi

*Old Man Musing*

Short memorial tribute to an unsung female Gambian political, human rights activist and freedom fighter, Aja Nogoi Njie, of blessed memory!

Most sadly, most regrettably and most unjustly, Aja Nogoi Njie has continued to live in a state of a kind of numbness, physically, mentally and spiritually, going through a kind of life-long trauma and depression.

But with her political and human rights activism, notably in her capacity as 2nd Vice President of the Women’s wing, Nogoi Njie has also at the same time continued, in her own calm and quiet way and with a strong faith in her God, trying harder and harder, day in day out, to find ways to distract herself, albeit all alone and in silence.

Living such a kind of life, she has remained intensely traumatised, not only by the humiliation of her physical violation, but by the fear of having been somewhat and somehow, severely injured mentally, spiritually and otherwise.

The traumatic experience has, knowingly or unknowingly and willy nilly affected every part of her life – it even affected her as a human being, a person and a parent; so her continued engagement in activism therefore indeed remained the only ray of hope and happiness in her life.

Nonetheless, as she continues to embody our collective resilience as a people, she has constantly demonstrated the strength and the will to surmount the most daunting of challenges - nay the life-long trauma of being a victim of arbitrary torture and criminal rape.

But still Nogoi Njie has also wanted to be a part of not only her country’s “mourning” but also its “healing”; so she therefore had to continue with her political, social and human rights activism.

As such, her pristine and selfless contributions to our Gambian society as a political and human rights activist but also as feminist and women’s rights advocate are immense and second to none; they will continue to be forever present with us, as a form of continued legacy to generations yet unborn.

In so being, Nogoi Njie has risen to the forefront of our generation’s efforts to build on the foundations laid by our forefathers, especially those of the anti-colonialism era; yes, but she has also challenged us, as a people and as a nation, to continue to build a stronger, more just and more respectable Gambia, in accordance with our democratic values and the rule of law, for all and singularly for those of the next generations to be able to continue to simply live in decency and in dignity.

We, therefore hereby, pay her a special and most-deserved homage as we also reverentially honour, with indebted gratitude, the well-invested and exemplary life of one of our galant and heroic women, in the person of a titanic figure, our most beloved and highly respected Nogoi Njie, who passed away during the early hours of today 25 September at the West Field Clinic while still nursing herself physically and mentally from her trauma and agony; indeed still painfully recovering from those very wounds dastardly and cowardly inflicted on her and her comrades during their fearless and valorous “Kalama” resistance protest after the disgraceful and criminal killing of the late Solo Sandeng by Yaya Jammeh and his korkor hekkus of state-sponsored murderers and rapists.

Finally, such victims like the late Sukai Dahaba and Nogoi Njie, will remain the embodiment of our collective and uncompromising resistance, indeed our collective resilience against tyranny and oppression, nay barbaric and uncivilized behaviour.

They personify and indeed continue to represent all that is best in us, and, in so being have provided us with role models, inspiration and understanding, particularly for the benefit of generations yet to come.

Therefore, their names will undoubtedly figure prominently in embolden print whenever the true history of our beloved country and her people is written.

In the meantime, our beloved Nogoi Njie: -

RIP (Rest In Peace)

RIP (Rest In Power)

Nogoi Njie has Fallen! Abandoned and Betrayed.
By Madi Jobarteh

Nogoi Njie is the name of Resistance. A personality of confidence and dignity. She embodied courage and freedom. She is the manifestation of the strength of a woman. In her face and voice the beauty and vitality of the Gambia can be vividly seen and felt and and heard!

The passing of Nogoi Njie is yet another manifestation of the cost of dictatorship and the slow and disgraceful nature, if not the failure of accountability to address the plight of victims since 2017. So many victims have died over the past seven years yet it appears our nation and its government are not perturbed by this sad reality.

How long shall many more have to die from the pains inflicted on them by the evil APRC regime whose enablers and perpetrators continue to enjoy the highest positions of power and privilege in the Gambia Government until today. Scandalous to say the least!!

The passing of this patriotic Gambian Amazon highlights the shameful contradictions in our society in which the truth is betrayed and patriotism punished. A society that abandons her own sons and daughters who stood up for and gave everything to Mother Gambia but rewards those who have defrauded and inflicted pain on Mother Gambia.

Like Solo Sandeng, Lang Marong, Sukai Dahaba today too we witness with pain and sadness the demise of Nogoi Njie after their dreams and pains where betrayed by those in power since 2017. They stood up at the most dangerous time to demand system change only to be abandoned for their oppressors get rewarded!

Not only has the 2016 Coalition political parties and leaders failed to live up to that promise of a new Gambia but they also abandoned these gallant sons and daughters of the land to suffer in their pain and die like paupers as if they had no people for whom they fought. What a betrayal!

May Allah grant the gentle soul of Nogoi Njie and all her fallen comrades eternal rest in peace in Janatul Firdawsi! Amen

For The Gambia Our Homeland
