Inspector General of Police Mr Alhagi Mamour Jobe Monday promoted a female traffic officer who earned the admiration and respect of the public for her hard work during the heavy downpour of rain on Saturday.

Below is a press statement issued by The Gambia Police Force.

“On Saturday, a picture emerged online showing a female Traffic Officer directing traffic under heavy rains.

There was a heavy downpour of rain and the road was flooded and traffic high. Corporal Jarju instead of abandoning her post, took off her shoes, pulled up her trousers to knee level and got into the flowing water and continued to give signals to vehicles with unwavering passion, diligence and dedication amidst heavy rains.

The image of the selfless officer sparked admiration and requests by many Gambians of diverse backgrounds for the IGP to consider motivating the lady.

This morning the Inspector General of Police Alhagi Mamour Jobe had the singular honour and pleasure of decorating Corporal Kaddy Jarju to the rank of Sergeant at his office.

While congratulating her for the hard work and selfless service, he used the opportunity to call on other officers to emulate such diligence and dedication to serving the public.”

What The IGP must know! Lessons from Kaddy Jarju
By Madi Jobarteh

It has been reported by FatuNetwork that TAF company has donated 100 rain boots to the Gambia Police Force as well as a big fat ram to Sgt. Kaddy Jarju today. Commendations to TAF for such leadership!

By now what the IGP and the entire police community must realise is that when citizens expose, criticize and condemn the actions or inactions of law enforcement officers it is meant to bring them good and not to destroy them! We are in a democracy where it is obvious that public institutions must be transparent and held accountable by citizens. Criticism is Accountability. Such criticism can be pleasant or unpleasant, fact or fiction or in good or bad faith, but it is the right of citizens to question, criticize and condemn public institutions and officials as they see fit.

In the days of Yaya Jammeh, whoever had put the picture of Kaddy Jarju would have been arrested and maltreated by the police themselves. One would have been accused of being anti police, unpatriotic and seeking to tarnish the image of the police and the country.

We can recall the case of Minah Manneh several years ago who shared a video of a police officer kicking a school girl on the street! She was hunted like meat such that she had to flee the country to save her life. Why?

But today, thanks to democracy that we delivered to ourselves, not only has Kaddy been celebrated but TAF has gone further to empower the entire institution with this much needed support. I am sure many more are coming.

Isn’t it great that Kaddy has both a promotion and a Tabaski ram? Isn’t it great that the Police got boosted with materials? That’s the beauty of democracy that the IGP must recognize and embrace!

Therefore we love our Police because we the citizens created the Police. It is our power and authority that they have. They are there to protect our rights at all times such as Kaddy was doing barefooted under the rain!

We will watch them. We will expose corruption and police brutality. We will criticize them. But also we will support them to abide by the law to do their job well. They must not see our criticism as hate, disrespect and pulling them down.

On that note while we celebrate Kaddy and commend TAF, I hereby demand the IGP once again to look into the case of Haruna Jatta and Ousman Darboe.

Haruna was a Gambian whose life must not be taken for free by anyone! There must be investigation to ensure justice and accountability for him.

Similarly Ousman Darboe was a human being who was married to a Gambian and has children who are Gambian. The claims by his wife and friends and by himself first and foremost that he was tortured by the Anti Crime Unit must be investigated by the IGP.

Next week will be one year since Ousman died yet the IGP has not provided the autopsy report of Ousman to his wife. Why?

His young children will grow up without knowing the truth about the death of their father if there is no investigation. In that case they will grow up hating the police and society for their lack of a father! Does the conscience of the IGP Mamour Jobe allow him to live with that?

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance and that is what sustains democracy. It is only within the environment of democracy that our rights can be protected and our needs fulfilled. Therefore let us continue to hold the Police and the entire Gambia Government accountable today and tomorrow and forever and ensure that democracy continues to flourish on our land!

For The Gambia Our Homeland!

The Point Editorial.

======================================================================

Values like patriotism, commitment, hard work, and so on, as fundamental element to the development of any nation. Therefore, these are not mere words of fantasy.

They are echoed for a purpose, and the ultimate aim is national development.

As famously put by former United States politician and statesman, John F Kennedy asked not what your country can do for you, asked what you can do for your country.

Just last week, the social media platforms were inundated with images of a young policewoman manning traffic amid heavy downpour without any raincoats or water-proof boots.

The young officer who was later identified as Cpl Kaddy Jarju gained instant admiration a cross section of the populace for her bravery and patriotism.

She had an option to abandon post when the rains started. And the Police High Command would have no reason to question her because she was ill-equipped at the time to continue directing traffic amid the downpour.

But due to her love for the nation, she stayed on and continue to direct traffic. As soon as the first image appeared online, it immediately went virally attracting huge admirers. Kaddy’s selfless service to her nation is one that should be emulate by all serving men and women in police uniform.

The young police officer, who up till to the time many believed was a fall from grace, was police Corporal Kaddy Jarju, gained immediate recognition from the police high command, gaining her instant promotions to Sergeant. She also took home various gifts from individual Gambian both home and in the diaspora, who are in total approval of her service to the nation.

The Gambia belongs to no individual or group. It is a product of collective effort and hence-common property. Being patriotic to the nation simply means being patriotic to oneself. It is a well-known principle within development discourse that for progress to be achieved by any society, the people have to be the driving force behind it.

Let’s bear in mind that all development undertakings must involve the people, who ought to be part and parcel of the initiation and implementation stages of development projects.

We once again, salute the Sgt Jarju and The Gambia Police for elevating her with a new rank. The era of promotion based on whom you know should cease immediately. Promotion in any workforce should be based on merit. Let’s try and motivate and encourage those young officers, who are extremely giving out their best.

Jarju, who enlisted into The Gambian Police Force in 2008, should be a shining example to hundreds of colleagues in service. Thanks You Sgt Jarju for your show of patriotism to The Gambia.

Encouraging Good Citizenship - Sergeant Kaddy Jarju Gift Fund

The Fatu Network

Thank you all for donating to the Sergeant Kaddy Jarju Gift Fundraiser. Together, we have raised $4,522. Out of this amount, $155.95 was charged for fees and refunds, leaving a balance of $4,372.43 for Kaddy.

As indicated on the screenshot below (not posted here), it will take five business days for the money to be paid into my account. So, to avoid the wait, I did a local transfer to pay Kaddy in advance while I wait for the initial amount to be cleared. I have also rounded up the amount to $5,000, which is D250,000.

The money will be presented to Prince Almameh James Manga for him to give to Kaddy. This is because I do not have Kaddy’s contacts and I got the photo of her that went viral from Manga’s Facebook Page.
Left to me, there will be no formal presentation ceremony but after talking to a friend, he suggests that it is best to do so for the donors to see.

Once again, thank you Gambia. This is a collective effort and I am happy that we did it together.
