"The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry trailer in Essex.

The vehicle was found shortly before 01:40 BST at Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, police said.

Essex Police said the trailer has been moved to a secure location where the bodies of those inside - a teenager and 38 adults - can be recovered.

The driver, named locally as Mo Robinson, 25, from Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said the trailer arrived via ferry from Zeebrugge, Belgium, into Purfleet on the River Thames."

"The BBC has spoken to the families of three Vietnamese people who are worried their relatives may have been in the trailer.

The family of one woman say she sent a text saying she could not breathe.

They say Pham Tra My, 26, sent the message on Tuesday night and they have not been able to contact her since. They said they had paid £30,000 for her to be smuggled to Britain.

Two other families have also been in touch with the BBC. They are relatives of a 26-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman.

The 19-year-old's brother said she called him early on Tuesday to say she was getting in to a container and was turning off her phone to avoid detection.

There has been no word from her since, he said, but a people smuggler had returned money to the family. "

A decision on whether to charge or release an Irish truck driver arrested in connection with the deaths of 39 migrants found in a refrigerated trailer in Britain is expected today.

Three more Irish suspects are also being questioned by Essex police this morning after their arrests on Friday. Police arrested a married Irish couple, both aged 38, in Warrington before dawn on Friday.

The couple, who run a haulage business and beauty salon in Warrington, have one adult child and two younger children.

The husband and wife were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and the manslaughter of the 39 victims - now thought to include both Chinese and Vietnamese nationals.

A fourth suspect, a 48-year-old man from Northern Ireland, was arrested on Friday at Stansted Airport on suspicion of conspiracy to traffic people and manslaughter.

The 25-year-old truck driver from Co Armagh was arrested at the scene of the discovery in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He is still being questioned on suspicion of murder. On Thursday dectectives were granted more time to question him

The trucker is believed to know the man who was detained at Stansted on Friday. The arrested driver’s truck was also previously owned by the woman arrested in Warrington on Friday.

She had registered the truck to an address in Varna, Bulgaria, but when those details emerged publicly on Thursday, she told reporters had sold it 13 months ago to a firm in Ireland.

The trailer in which the bodies were found is owned by an Irish company which has premises in Co Monaghan and a presence in Dublin. It is not the same company that bought the truck from the woman arrested in Warrington.

The 39 migrants found dead in the back of a lorry in Essex are believed to be Vietnamese nationals, police have said.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Smith of Essex Police said on Friday evening: "At this time, we believe the victims are Vietnamese nationals, and we are in contact with the Vietnamese Government.

"We are in direct contact with a number of families in Vietnam and the UK, and we believe we have identified families for some of the victims whose journey ended in tragedy on our shores.

"The confirmatory evidence needed to formally present cases to HM Senior Coroner for her consideration has not yet been obtained.

"This evidence is being gathered across a number of jurisdictions worldwide. As a result, we cannot at this time announce the identity of any of the victims."

Mr Smith said specially trained people, supported by Vietnamese interpreters, were manning its dedicated hotline between 9am to midnight, seven days a week, for people seeking to be in touch about the incident.

The bodies of eight women and 31 men were found in a refrigerated trailer attached to a lorry in an industrial park in Grays, Essex, in the early hours of October 23.

4th November 2019.

Eight suspects have been held in Vietnam after 39 people were found dead in a lorry in Essex.

The arrests came as a team of Vietnamese officials arrived in Britain to help formally identify the 31 men and eight women.

The suspects are being held in relation to people smuggling offences, the director of police in the Nghe An province in north-central Vietnam said.

Two people were arrested in the Ha Tinh province of Vietnam last week.

The victims were discovered in a refrigerated lorry trailer on an industrial estate in Grays on 23 October.

Essex Police said on Friday that all of those who were found were believed to be Vietnamese.

Police had initially believed they were Chinese.

Essex Police said it was now in "direct contact with a number of families in Vietnam and the UK" and the Vietnamese Government.

A spokeswoman for the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the incident a "serious humanitarian tragedy".

Post-mortem examinations are being carried out on the victims to establish the cause of their deaths.

More than 100 people attended a service for the victims at the Church of the Holy Name and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in east London on Saturday evening.

The driver of the lorry, Maurice Robinson, from Northern Ireland, appeared in court last week charged with a string of offences, including 39 counts of manslaughter.

Extradition proceedings have also begun against 22-year-old Eamonn Harrison, who was arrested in Dublin on a European Arrest Warrant.

Police are also seeking two brothers from Northern Ireland, Ronan and Christopher Hughes, who are wanted on suspicion of manslaughter and people trafficking.
