Police have arrested Bubacarr Jallow, a marabout and a resident of Banjulinding village for allegedly butchering Mama Barrow who is believed to be in her 30s, The Point has been reliably informed.
The suspect who is currently helping the police with their investigation was arrested at Batokunku village, Kombo South District, a place he has been hiding after he allegedly committed the crime, sources say.
The remains of the victim were found around the Banjul International Airport by a security officer of The Gambia Civil Aviation.
The deceased was a native of Badibou Gunjur in the North Bank Region.
The suspect has also been charged with murder, contrary to 187 of the criminal code, laws of The Gambia and currently awaiting trial, policy confirmed.
The spokesperson of The Gambia Police Force, ASP Lamin Njie explained that on April 18, a security officer of The Gambia Civil Aviation reported the matter at New Yundum Police Station that he came across the decomposed remains of a human being which was put in three separate bags.
“The police immediately went to the scene, confirmed the story and took the decomposed body to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul,” police spokesperson said.
He added that prior to the incident, the police at Tallinding Police Station also received a report from one Bintou Barrow that her sister Mama Barrow left home since April 10, and had since not returned.
“Police immediately referred themselves to the case of the missing lady. A search was conducted and later Bintou’s family informed the police that the deceased (Mama Barrow) often visits a Marabout at Banjulinding. The police went into a search to look for the marabout and was finally arrested at Batokunku where he was hiding.”
The suspect, according to police, claimed that the deceased owed him D150, 000 and had failed to pay it. On the fateful day of the incident, police say, the marabout asked the deceased to pay her the said money, but she refused and a fight ensued between them. “The suspect hit the deceased with a stick and decided to jump on her neck and held it until she suffocated to death.”
The suspect, the GPF spokesperson added, was having a knife and decided to mutilate the deceased’s body and cut her into pieces and put them in three different bags.
“Babucarr Jallow decided to take a taxi in order to throw away the body. The first taxi driver he attempted to take refused because the man told him that he had slaughtered a cow for rituals and that the meat was not fit for hum consumption and he wanted to throw away the meat around the airport. The taxi driver got suspicious and reported the matter to Farato Police Station.”
“He took another taxi and decided to throw away the so-called ‘meat’ around the airport and went into hiding.”
Meanwhile, another source who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said the late Mama Barrow was married to a man currently residing in Europe.
“The family of the deceased and the marabout at one time were in fact looking at the lady when he got missing. To our surprise, the marabout asked us to give him some money so that he can go to Guinea Bissau and look for Mama. We become suspicious of the marabout and suddenly he disappeared and we didn’t see him until when we learned that he was arrested.” Author: Momodou Jawo

Police prosecutors yesterday filed a single count charge of murder before a magistrates’ court in Brikama against Bubacarr Jallow, accused of murdering one Mama Barrow.
Jallow has subsequently pleaded guilty.
Police prosecutors alleged the incident happened on 11 March at Banjulinding Kombo North in West Coast Region.
They said the accused with malice and after thought unlawfully caused the death of Mama Barrow.
At this juncture, police prosecutor Bobo Jarju made an application under section 62 of the Criminal Procedure Code(CPC) to transfer the case to criminal division of the high court for trial.
He applied for the court to enter a plea of not guilty on behalf of the accused as the matter is a capital offense and is a matter of procedure.
After hearing the application made by the prosecutor, the principal magistrate Omar Cham granted the application made by the prosecutor and entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of the accused.
However, the trial magistrate ordered for the case to be transferred to the high court and remanded him pending his appearance at the high court.
