"He was all along sitting in their compound. Even personnel of the Police Intervention Unit who were looking for the alleged killer found (Ceesay) in their compound. Mamadi Ceesay, a native of Berending village, Kombo South District and a member of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Military Police at the Yundum Barrack, who was arrested in connection with the Gunjur-Berending land scuffle has been released, The Point has been informed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The spokesperson of the GAF, Lamin Sanyang, confirmed the development to The Point. “Mr. Ceesay was questioned by personnel of the Military Police and also asked to write a statement with regard to the matter. The police are currently investigating the matter and as a result, his name happens to come out during the police investigation,” he told our reporter in an interview.
Major Lamin K. Sanyang said his (Mamadi Ceesay) detention was meant for him to write a statement and nothing else. “In fact I can tell you that he reported to work since last week. He was at work yesterday and even on Monday.”
A source that spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity said Mr. Ceesay had not returned home since the previous week and efforts to reach him through his mobile phones proved futile.
“I can emphatically tell you that (Mamadi Ceesay) was not part of the problem. “When he closed from work on that fateful day, he already found that the problem was over. He was all along sitting in their compound. Even personnel of the Police Intervention Unit who were looking for the alleged killer found (Ceesay) in their compound. I am surprised to learn that he was detained in connection with the matter,” he told our reporter.
Last month, a land dispute erupted between Gunjur and Berending villages which claimed the life of one Buba Jammeh. One Buba Drammeh of Berending was alleged to have shot the victim Buba Jammeh in the stomach as the two villages scuffled over land issue resulting in the injury of four other people. The deceased was in his late 40s. Police were reported to have arrested nine people in connection with the matter but the main suspect was believed to be at large. Author: Momodou Jawo
