The Association of Customs Clearing and Forwarding Agents (ACCFA), last week held their 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Atlantic hotel in Banjul.
The AGM was attended by several high-level officials including Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Commissioner of customs at GRA among others, key personalities.
The Association was formed in 2001 and became fully operational in 2003 with the aim of facilitating and complementing customs effort in collecting revenue for government,and to provide trade information and promotion, including training of personnel required to operate such service.
The AGM targets to accord members the opportunity to meet and report on their success, challenges and chart the way forward.
Essa Wally, ACCFA vice president said the AGM was part of their constitutional requirements to report on the task and responsibility bestowed on them.
He said the idea of creating the Association was conceived in 2001 in response to a request from the then commissioner general of customs and excise and other clearing agents.
Mr. Wally said their vision is to promote and develop ethical business standards and to write project proposals for constant improvement on clearing and forwarding of goods prevailing at the port of Banjul and all the services connected with it in the best interest of the economy of the country.
Secretary General Sulayman Joof said the Association wants to create a uniform national Association of customs clearing and forwarding agents in the country to assist consignees and consignors in the unloading and loading of their cargo at the sea, airport and border posts.
He said it is also part of their activities to prepare booking for goods to be shipped, prepare customs declarations forms, paying duty and taxes, handling charges for cargo and other shipments.
Permanent Secretary at the ministry of trade Lamin Dampha emphasized on the significant roles the Association play towards national building and challenged members to continue the good work in moving The Gambia business competitiveness forward.
Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner of customs Alieu Ceesay called on members to maintain their commitment to the Association, noting that customs relies on information they receive from them.
