Lamin Colley, a native of Salikenni village, Central Badibou of the North Bank Region has stated that elections for district chiefs and alkalolu will cause disunity within the communities, arguing that it should not be included in the new constitution.

“There should be no election for chiefs, and for alkalolu, tradition should be maintained. The president should appoint the chief. The president should not also have power more than the National Assembly members. The marble system of voting should be maintained in our elections,” he said.

He was speaking at Salikenni village at the public consultation of the Constitutional Review Commission members continue on their engagement with communities in a bid to getting the view of locals over what they want to be included in the new constitution.

Colley added that election for presidency and National Assembly should not be held in the same day, adding that regional governors should not be elected too.

Abdoulie Jarju, said the IEC chairman and his commissioners should only have two terms. “They should be scrutinised properly and declare their asset before appointment and after leaving office.”

Gambians in the Diaspora, he added, should only contest for presidency in the country but with conditions. “The aspirant candidates should be in the country for the period of five years in order to enable the individual to know what Gambians want. NAM should be empowered so that the authorities will not be able to control them.”

Meanwhile, at Kerewan village in Lower Badibou District, Marie Jobe, the chairwoman of the Njawara Village Development Committee opined that citizenship by marriage should be 5 years and citizenship by naturalisation should be 10 years.

Mustapha Jawara of Kerewan, opined that citizenship by marriage should be maintained at 7 years and citizenship by naturalisation should reduce to 10 years, adding that Gambians in Diaspora should be eligible to vote and be voted for if they stay in the country for certain number of years.

Njembou Jammeh, a native of Kerewan said the new constitution should empower women. She suggested that the new constitution should decriminalise the use of plastic bags and FGM to be legalised.

Yahya Fofana, from Suwareh Kunda village, said the appointment of ministers should be approved by the National Assembly through scrutiny. Fofana suggested that the election of lady councilors should also be re-visited by the new constitution, pointing out that the new constitution should be written in local languages.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
