Gambia’s Vice President and leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) is playing around in Europe. Ousainou Darboe has been away from work for almost two weeks, pursuing private venture matters at the expense of The Gambian taxpayers. Mr. Darboe is not on leave, but that never stopped him from abandoning his office to attend private functions. He left Banjul about one week ago, with a high-powered delegation to attend a forum organized by some group of Gambians in Oslo, Norway. Darboe and his delegation, mainly UDP officials, in the government and supporters, were welcomed on arrival by a rented fleet of limousines.
After spending few nights at a luxurious five-star Norwegian hotel, with his delegation, Darboe, proceeded to the United Kingdom, where he was billed by his party supporters to grace a fundraising drive. Reports have it that he missed the fundraising gala night. AD
Faced with an old age, and lack of energy in the tank, the aging VP, later addressed his supporters. Throughout his address, he kept emphasizing the need for a UDP government to be voted into office come the next elections. He thinks that, a UDP elected government, will legitimize whatever appointments they might envisaged while in office. The issue of an all-inclusive government or diversity is not part of Mr. Darboe’s political philosophy.
Mr. Darboe and his delegation are not due in Banjul until October 19th. Each night, Darboe and his delegation spend in Norway and England, they are paid per diem allowances.
Keep in mind that he is not on an official function. He is not representing The Gambian government at the aforementioned meetings, he has been billed to attend. He is on his own. Darboe does whatever he likes and get away with it.
Last month, Mr. Darboe, as Vice President and Chairperson of the National Security Council, launched an appeal to Gambia’s donor partners, asking them, to help bailout the country from what he called an “imminent” hunger. He even claimed that over 1.8 million Gambians were at the risk of facing hunger due to acute food shortages.
Mr. Darboe and his delegation being away for over two weeks, we are talking about The Gambian state, spending close to D20 million dalasis in paying per diem allowances to his delegation. Mr. Darboe is becoming a “high maintenance” Vice President.
Sadly, Darboe’s tenure as VP, hasn’t brought in any meaningful development for the country. He is out of touch with the average Gambian worker; and his attitude towards cabinet fellows is left to be desired. He does not only treat the President with an utter contempt, he also has this delusional notion that he is the head of the government. Hence, that’s why, he is absenting himself from work for two weeks without leave.
Few weeks ago, when he was tasked to help mediate a dispute between some group of Gambian teachers, and the Ministry of Education, the temperamental Ousainou Darboe, threatens to fire the striking teachers. He did not even bother to hear the teachers’ grievances. He just concluded that he was going to replace them with retired teachers.
Thanks to the intervention of the Presidency, the matter was amicably resolved. Darboe’s approach and style of redressing the dispute, was no doubt going to shut down the entire education system. He is a bad mediator.
While in the UK, Mr. Darboe received information that President Adama Barrow, has no intention of surrendering the Presidency to him, at the end of his five-year mandate. Barrow also held couple of meetings with his supporters while he was away, encouraging them to support his Presidency.
The issue of the upcoming UDP Congress, was a subject of discussion during those meetings. Mr. Barrow even suggested that any attempt on the side of the UDP to replace him, will amount to treason because in his own words “sitting Presidents” are never opposed by their parties during conventions.
Shocked by Barrow’s pronouncements, Darboe is quoted by his aides, as having said that he is not going to give way to Barrow in the upcoming convention. He vowed to represent the party if selected. He also said he wouldn’t resign, based on the latest information reaching us. He has changed his mind. He had earlier wanted to resign from the government. He wants to remain on the job until Barrow fires him.
While Darboe and his delegation are in the UK shopping, attending dinners, and interacting with party supporters, The Gambia, has been plunged into a civil unrest this past weekend. Residents of Kuloro, Pirang, and Sotobuba, located in Kombo East, had a serious arm confrontation. This followed, a dispute over a football match. Armed police were deployed in the area to help restore calm. They are still stationed there.
Ousainou Darboe is not doing justice to The Gambia taxpayers. He is also not a team player as far as the collective national interest is concerned.
There is nowhere, a Vice President of a country, will abandon his work to pursue non-state matters for weeks. Mr. Darboe thinks that his party’s interest supersedes national interest. He also thinks that The Gambia is indebted to him. The Gambia doesn’t owe him anything. He should get back to work and stop playing around Europe. We rest our case!
