Visitors to Gambia will have seen the abandoned weighing station near Abuko ,structure is already there but wants "renovating" before being utilised,a ready made site.
Lorries (called trucks by the U.S) have for many years been overloaded and many of them suffer from very bad defects weighing will help to make the vehicles only carry the weight that is allowed by law,thereby having two effects of firstly providing a safety aspect, secondly providing a much needed revenue stream for the new administration.Thirdly less wear and tear on the road infrastructure.

Afrique Pesage Gambia limited in collaboration with Gambia’s Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure and the National Road Authority Friday launched the Axle Load Control Temporal Weighing site along Banjul –Serekunda highway.
The launching ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), government officials, representatives of Group Afrique Pesage, administrator of Afrique Pesage Senegal and Managing Director of Africa Pesage Gambia limited among other important personalities.
Pedro Diouf, administrator of Afrique Pesage Senegal; the brainchild of the initiative commended President Adama Barrow and his government through the Minister of Works for giving them the opportunity to do business in The Gambia.
He said since President Barrow came to office, he has been advocating for African integration especially The Gambia and Senegal, “and what we are witnessing today is a clear manifestation of the cordial relationship that exists between The Gambia and Senegal.”
Mr. Diouf said his team deemed it necessary to play their part in strengthening the bond of friendship between The Gambia and Senegal which, he said brought about the project.
In his official launching statement on behalf of Gambia transport and works minister, deputy permanent secretary Bai Ebrima Mboob said the launching of the project is in line with one of the key strategic objectives of the National Development Plan of The Gambia that targets infrastructure and restoring energy services to power the economy.
One of the important aspects of the project is the sustainability of road network through heavy vehicle management with the help of the implementation of an Axle Load Control.
According to DPS Mboob, heavy vehicle management through axle load control has been endorsed by ECOWAS as part of the development of a regional initiative to curb overloading, saying that in September 2011, the council of ministers approved the supplementary Act and an ambitious road map for its implementation. “Therefore government of The Gambia has committed itself to translate in its legislation and implement the supplementary Act (/SP, 17/02/17) relating to the harmonisation of standards and procedures for the control of dimensions weight and axle load of goods vehicles within the member states of ECOWAS.
He further stated that it is in that spirit that the government of The Gambia entered into a contract with Group Africa Pesage SA in 2018 to help preserve road network from premature damages by installing Axle load weighing stations in various strategic locations across the country,
He said it is a fact that Gambia has been seen significant achievements in recent years in the transport sector, saying to put that into perspective, over 80 percent of truck roads have been reconstructed over the last few years and it is hoped that by the end of 2020, 100 percent of the country’s primary road network will be in good condition. “Therefore, the importance of putting in place mechanism to preserve these huge investments cannot be over emphasized.”
DPS Mboob stated that the objective is to raise the awareness and sensitize the general public before the actual implementation of axle load control in all the strategic locations across the country.
They solicited the cooperation of all stakeholders most especially the trucker drivers to comply with rules and regulation at the sites.
He thanked the European Union for their continuous support in the socio-economic development of The Gambia in general and the Transport sector in particular. He also extended gratitude to the entire management of Group Afrique Pesage SA for their collaboration and cooperation.
Other speakers included Managing Director of National Road Authority Momodou Senghore, Managing Director of Group Afrique Pesage Senegal Sylvestre Bailly and Managing Director of Afrique and Pesage Gambia limited.

You know Gambia more than me.  I have always passed that place in Abuko but never thought what it was used for.
