Dictators Are Made and Not Born

It is very unfortunate that some elements of our society in the Gambia are still bent on turning our president into somebody very different from the Barrow we voted for to lead us as the saying goes: dictators are made and not born.
It has come to the notice of this paper that some youth folks who called themselves the Barrow Youth Movement in the Basse administrative area are mobilizing other youth groups in the area to go and give a helping hand on the President Barrow mother’s farm at Makamang kuda.
It is very unfortunate that there are people who still think like giving a president a free labor. This paper has not long ago alluded to some similarities between the current president and that of the former he succeeded in the person of Yahya Jammeh. The former president did have a youth movement called the Green Youths, and he also had a foundation called the Jammeh Foundation for Peace.
If President Barrow wants to be completely different from Jammeh who was a dictator and worst of all very corrupt, he should discourage people volunteering their labor for cheap popularity.
The former President was turned into a big monster, dictator and a businessman whose desire for business had gone far into state resources. When Yahya Jammeh took power with the barrels of gun, his first pronouncements were very good and sounded like coming from a democrat. He said very clearly that their intention was not to stay but just to correct the system and go back to the barracks. They also said that they were going to be soldiers with a difference; and above all they said the former President Sir Dawda Jawara had over stayed in power.
Unfortunately, Gambians started to mobilize each other and made calls on Jammeh to stay and giving him the impression that he was the best of all people in country. The Daily News need not mention names but those who lived more than 50 years know what this editorial is talking about.
Shortly later movements of all kinds stared shooting up from all over the country calling on the president to stay. Even our religious leaders were guilty of taking part in that propaganda. That made Jammeh to feel that he was indispensable and started showing dictatorial tendencies. Even where he killed some Gambians and non-Gambians who were on death row, he was hailed for having done the right thing by many people which was unfortunate indeed. In fact, some were killed and they were never on such death row and one such person was late Lamin Darboe of Bakoteh. At the time of his killing, he was serving life sentence as he had been pardoned by former President Jawara.
We have also seen all categories of people offering free labor on former President Jammeh’s farms at Kanilai. This did not leave former cabinet members, parliamentarians and heads of departments out, if going by what was discussed in the social media was true, and then where are we heading to? Should Gambians again be at it by trying to turn a democrat into another dictator? No! we believe that such people cannot called themselves good citizens and that they must desist from such as it is not telling well on our newly-found democracy.
The Daily News is calling on President Barrow to denounce such people and their actions as he denounces the move of some journalists who allegedly approached him and asked money to sell the president’s imagine. Barrow should denounce and refuse to allow such opportunists on his mum’s farm as he refused the so many names given to him.
M. president, you are a democrat so please refused to be manipulated and remember that dictators are made and not born.
