The Gambia has been ranked 2nd and 3rd on customs procedures out of the 23 countries in West and Central Africa affiliated to the Regional Office for Capacity Building (ROCB) under World Customs Organization. This development came through the commitment and dedication by The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), who underwent a thorough assessment carried out by the Regional Office for Capacity Building for west and central Africa under the World Customs Organization in Brussels.
Speaking to the media shortly after the return of The Gambian delegation headed by Mr. Alagie K. Mbye, Customs manager in-charge of Seaport Custom Operations and also a member of the regional working group regional office for capacity building ROCB under WCO, said the nomination took place two months ago in Conakry, where The Gambia was included in this working group.
The group, he said, is in charge of the policy and other customs procedures for the region, adding that during the last meeting held in Brussels from 28th to 30th June 2018, with the commissioner General in attendance, GRA was lucky to be handed a very important roadmap document which was rigorously assessed by ROCB and WCO.
According to him, there was another complied roadmap called the Regional Strategic Plan for 2018 -2022 and in this document, Central and West African countries are ranked.
‘Out of 23 countries, The Gambia came out 2nd in terms of partnership, also 2nd in terms of human resources management, 2nd in terms of customs procedures and 3rd in terms of strategic management and again 3rd in terms of leadership.’
Mbye disclosed that these are the five keys areas that the ROCB and World Customs Organizations assessed GRA out of 23 countries in Central and West Africa.
He described this award as a big plus for the people of The Gambia particularly GRA for its commitment and dedication in ensuring that The Gambia was ranked second and third best respectively at the level of World Customs Organization.
He also thanked the current Government of The Gambia under the leadership of president Adama Barrow for the support and encouragement to GRA to enable them partner with developed countries.
He also expressed delight for awarding The Gambia these prestigious awards out of 23 countries in Central and West Africa on customs procedures. This, he went on, has added more value to the Management of GRA under the purview of the Commissioner General Mr. Yankuba Darboe.
The handing over took place at the Brussels meeting from 28th to 30th June 2018 and was attended by the commissioner General GRA and senior management who were part of the delegation and team from Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs. Author: Abdoulie Nyockeh

The president of the Republic of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, has revealed plans that will remarkably transform the livelihood and landscape of North Bank Region and the entire country with the construction of a bridge to connect the Banjul-Barra crossing point.
He made this remarks at Essau, NBR, during day one of his nationwide tour. Responding to the community’s concern about the struggling state of the Banjul-Barra ferry service, the president said a permanent solution is at afoot stating that discussions have reached an advanced stage to construct a bridge over Banjul-Barra crossing point that would last fifty years.
According to the State House Facebook page, the foundation stone will be laid in 2019 and works will take four years to complete. President Barrow also added that funds have been secured for the construction of 25 boreholes that would provide water to 85, 000 people across the country.
According to him, the African Development Bank has also approved funding for the provision of 60 other boreholes per year in The Gambia. “In four years, we would deliver 140 boreholes across the country,” he declared.
Confident of his development plans for the country, the president urged the citizens to have a checklist to assess his government on his national development plan. Author: Momodou Jawo Source: Picture: His Excellency President Adama Barrow
