Darboe: APRC knew UDP was cancer to its demise
The Point: Monday, May 14, 2018 http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/darboeaprc-knew-udp-was-cancer-to-its-demise
According to the secretary general of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the then APRC government could not stand UDP because they knew the yellow party will be the cancer to their demise.
He also said the party’s dominance couldn’t be seen because its votes have always been stolen by the former regime in the previous elections.
Darboe made these statements on Saturday evening at his residence along Kairaba Avenue after his party consolidated its dominance in the new political landscape of The Gambia.
The UDP won 7 seats out of 8 available mayoral and chairman seats losing only a seat to the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) in the Janjanbureh Administrative Area of Kuntaur CRR North. These wins included two of the most important administrative councils, Banjul City Council (BCC) and Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC).
Lawyer Darbaoe said the former government could not stand his party because they knew that it is the party that was capable of ending their reign.
“We have always been dominant; that’s the truth. That’s why APRC could not stand us because they knew it is UDP that is the cancer that will cause their demise.”
Happy and relaxed Darboe said that UDP could have been in power had their votes not been stolen because the party was the dominant party. “UDP has always been dominant in this country that is the truth, but in the past, our elections have been stolen that is why we never form the government, but we’ve always been dominant,” he said.
“When you have a fair minded commission, a commission that is meant to ensure that electoral justice prevails and they did their work according to the rule and it is now that people are seeing dominance but we have always been dominant.”
He expressed his delight over Rohey Lowe being elected as the first mayoress of the city, describing it as historic. “It is history making for the country and history making for our party,” he said. “What it means is that there should be more opportunities given to women so that when you talk of women empowerment, we should really mean it, we should not just reduce women to king makers.”
“They themselves should be elected to places of responsibilities where they can take decisions and this is what the election of lady mayor elect Rohey Lowe indicates.”
Darboe said the elected mayors and chairmen went to nominations as UDP candidates but after being elected into office, they ceased to be representatives of UDP, saying “they are representatives of the people.”
He thanked all the candidates and the general Gambian populace for what he described as showing great maturity and civility.

Gambia’s capital makes history by voting first female mayor by Nduta Waweru, May 14, 2018
https://face2faceafrica.com/article/gambias-capital-makes-history-by-voting-first-female-mayor
Gambia’s capital city made history on Saturday for voting the first-ever female mayor.
Rohey Malick Lowe made waves in the city when she announced her candidature for one of Africa’s smallest capitals. It was not surprising though considering her late father Malik Lowe had held the mantle at one time........
She is now the second female mayor in West Africa after Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, who was sworn in on May 11 after clinching the mayoral seat of Sierra Leone capital Freetown.

Gambians Have Decided In Municipal, Regional Council Elections
Foroyaa: May 14, 2018 ©ô Parties Express Disappointment on Abysmal Voter Turnout
By Yankuba Jallow / Moro ML Minteh http://foroyaa.gm/gambians-have-decided-in-municipal-regional-council-elections-parties-express-disappointment-on-abysmal-voter-turnout/
Gambians on Saturday May 12th 2018, went to the polls to elect Mayors and Chairpersons who will man the affairs of their various Municipalities and Regions.
At various voting centres visited by this reporter, people voted without waiting for each other because the centres were not busy. People went on their daily businesses as if nothing significant was happening in the country. In his statement, the APRC candidate for the Kanifing Municipality, Ousman Rambo Jatta, said the polling station at the Dippa Kunda Mosque saw the IEC using a supplementary voters list that was not in possession of party agents other than Returning Officers; that the people whose names were not part of the list, were allowed to vote therein; that if there was any supplementary voters list, it should be given to all party agents and referred to the process as one which lacked transparency and fair play on the side of contesting parties.
Seedy Njie, the spokesperson for the APRC, voiced similar remarks; that IEC is tasked to handle elections in the country and they should be straightforward in order to avoid causing confusion in the country.
Yerro Jallow, the GDC party supervisor in the Dippa Kunda Area, blamed the Independent Electoral Commission for causing their party agents to report at polling centers on time; that the Party holds the IEC responsible for failing to turnout early to start voting on time by not given them confirmation letters to present their Party agents; that the polls should not have started in the absence of their agents. ¡°There was no fair play on our side and we are not happy with the process,¡± he said.
On the Election Day, security was intensified and there were no major incidents reported. Polls were opened at 8am and party agents, security and IEC officials did the verification processes of all voting materials at hand before voting began. Despite the low turnout in the entire country, voting continued until at 5pm, when counting began on the spot.
After the counting and the Official announcement of results, the United Democratic Party won the Regional Chairperson seats for Brikima, Mansakonko, Janjanbureh (South), Basse, Kerewan and the Municipalities of Kanifing and Banjul City Council. Out of the eight administrative regions and municipalities in the country, the United Democratic Party (UDP) pulled seven, including the two municipalities of Banjul and Kanifing, despite the low voter turnout.
After the votes were counted, the UDP polled 121,746 votes, GDC 47,492 votes, APRC 42,625 votes, PDOIS 10,103 votes and the NRP 7,639 votes. The combination of Independent Candidates polled 27,901 votes.

UDP won Banjul with a dismal 26% of the votes, and KMC with 44%. Clearly, the Yellow party should be worried about the next presidential election. |

Welcome back kayjatta some years since your last posting, with such a percentage lead do you envisage a return to The Big Boss system instead of the democratic system that President Barrow is trying?

I think we should press on with the democratic system. It's been a while but you know democracy has once been the way for the Gambia. However, we need to return to the majority rule (52%) not the plurality of votes. There is no legitimacy for someone to rule with only 26% of the votes. In many countries, there would be a runoff election ....

I understand that BUT the major problem that I see is that MOST Gambians have NO interest in voting as they see no lifestyle improvements whichever party is elected, NOTHING changes. |
