Gambia to domesticate all international crimes recognised by ICC

The permanent secretary at the Office of the Vice President has spoken about government’s resolve as part of its transitional justice programme to domesticate all international crimes recognised by the ICC, so as to enable the country’s court deal with such atrocities at the domestic level.
This, she said, would also enable the country’s justice system to be at par with international best practices. Mariam Khan-Senghore was speaking recently while deputysing for the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs at a reception in honour of the 20th Anniversary of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court at a hotel in Kololi.
“This is the heart of the complementarity principle under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. And so The Gambia is now ready to play its rightful role as a full fledge member of the Rome Statute”. She acknowledged that as the new government of The Gambia embarks on the transitional justice programme, it remains fully committed to laying a foundation for the restoration of a credible democratic state founded on the principles of good governance and the rule of law. To this end, she informed that the priorities of government are two folds, putting in place a new and resilience architecture to uphold the highest standards of human rights and justice and the rule of law and dealing properly with the past human rights violation and abuses. “First a major component of our transitional justice project is the establishment of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) accompanied with accountability for past atrocities,” she said. While ensuring respect for human rights, she added, the TRRC is mandated to investigate and establish an impartial historical records of the nature, causes and extent of violations and abuses of human rights committed during the period of July 1994 to January 2017. “As parts of its mandate, the commission will also make recommendations for the persecution of perpetrators who bears the greatest responsibility for the major crimes” she said.
