President Adama Barrow was worried over low voter turnout in the just concluded Local Government election, saying Gambians should have come out with their large numbers and vote in for their best candidates to represent them.
He made this remark on Thursday in an interview with the press after casting his vote at Old Yundum.
President Barrow further pointed out that Gambians seemed not to be aware of the importance of local governments, adding the public was sensitised about the importance of Local Government election in the television and several gatherings and still they did not come out in large numbers to vote for their rightful candidates. “We would keep on sensitising them about the benefits of local government elections,” he said.
On civic education, President Barrow reiterated that; the country unlike previous era; is in a democratic era and that his government would be very much particular about civic education. “We will create opportunities for Gambians to learn and be aware.”
Editor’s note: Reporter Pa Modou Cham had made a special leg work on the low voter turnout and learnt that at Serrekunda Bartez Ward, a total of 7,835 tokens were given to the presiding officers on the ground for the 11 streams, but only 1, 636 casted their votes with 6,199 tokens remained. "Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
