Presidential adviser on Religion urges religious leaders to preach peace

President Adama Barrow’s special adviser on Religious Matters, Traditional Affairs and Culture has reminded Gambians and their religious leaders to be strong advocates of tolerance and to continue to preach peace to foster unity in the country.
Dembo Bojang alias Dembo By Force appeared at a social gathering at Dippa Kunda where he made an inspiring statement, appealing to Gambians to close ranks and to avoid any religious vices that can tear them apart.
Mr. Bojang said there is too much talking in the country relating to religion, pointing out that it is not helping the country’s peace and stability. “I heard somebody say that any day President Adama Barrow prays in an Ahmadiya mosque, he will lose his power as president of The Gambia. Who dares to say that because such kind of statement is not good for the country and it can bring instability,” he said.
President Barrow usually alternates mosques in every Muslim Friday congregational prayer since his ascension to the presidency and many believed that was a strategy to unite Gambians but Mr. Bojang said those claiming to be religious leaders should be careful of their statements in the media, as it can lead to instability in the country. “We should always promote religious tolerance and unity among ourselves,” he added.
He explained that it is the government’s responsibility to grant or not to grant television licences, saying they will study all the criteria to approve or disapprove licences. “So as a government, we will see the best option because we are representing everybody and we will always work in the interest of the nation.”
The hardline politician further appealed to people to stop using the media to “incite” violence, saying The Gambia is a secular state and the people should respect and love one another to foster unity, peace and stability.
