The Point: Monday, January 22, 2018
http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/unicef-rep-urges-households-to-give-accurate-info-in-mics

The UNICEF Country representative to The Gambia has called on households that will be interviewed for the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) to give accurate information, as the document to be developed after the exercise will serve as reference.

Ms. Sandra Lattouf was speaking on Wednesday at a press conference designed to inform the media and stakeholders about the exercise and their level of preparations.

The nationwide exercise that kicked off on Thursday 18 January 2018 is targeting 7,800 households across the country.

She reminded the public that Unicef is collaborating with The Gambia and other development partners in supporting The Gambia government in conducting MICS this year.

The result of this exercise, she explained, will complement the current report of the Demographic Health Survey conducted in 2013.

“In addition, the findings of MICS will provide rich information to guide the implementation of national development plans”.

She expressed optimism that the report will also help the country to measure progress towards achieving the SDGs.

“As we enter the data collecting phase, we are involving trained teams who will be visiting households where they will be collecting information. As highlighted by other speakers we have questionnaires that households will be answering. It is really important for visited households to open the doors to our trained teams during the exercise.”

She thus enjoined all to help the team in acquiring the necessary information and provide the team with accurate information especially about the living conditions of households, but not what they feel like.

UNICEF country rep maintained that consistent information is important, as the report would help to generate accurate information to develop a document that will be used as a reference.

She acknowledged that MICS 6 was conducted under the strong leadership of The Gambia, adding that very few governments around the world contribute financially to this exercise.

Ms. Lattouf therefore applauded the efforts of The Gambia government, partner ministries, development partners and sister United Nations agencies for their support in the conduct of the exercise.
