Gov’t generates D8 million from fisheries in 2017

 The Minister of Information has said that since the commencement of industrial fishing operations in June 2017, a total revenue of D8, 279,085 has been realised from license fees.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Demba Ali Jawo said a further D135, 000 was generated from payment of fishing license fees.
Last week, director of press also informed journalists that government fisheries policy is geared towards increasing the Gross Domestic Production and reducing poverty through employment creation.
The government took decision to lift the embargo as a way of increasing availability of fish, harness the upward revision of fisheries licenses by 25%, and create hundreds of jobs for the youth.
“D135,000 was generated from payment of fishing license forms. Revenue totalling D5, 252,168 was generated from 10 per cent fish landing fees,” Jawo said.
“The fisheries sector continues to gain prominence in the government’s development agenda due to its potential contribution to food security, improved nutrition, poverty eradication and addressing unemployment in the country,” the minister said.
The amendment of Fisheries Regulation 2008 and the lifting of the embargo imposed on o industrial fishing operation in the first quarter of 2017, according to Minister Jawo.
