Finance Minister resigns, Banjul Mayor abandons post

 According to reliable sources, Abdou Kolley, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, has resigned and is currently in Dakar, Senegal.
He has been replaced by Benjamin Roberts, who was Minister of Tourism.
Fatou Lamin Faye, Minister of Education, is overseeing the Ministry of Tourism.
Meanwhile, Abdoulie Bah, Mayor of Banjul, who last month recognised President-elect Barrow, has abandoned his post and is seeking refuge in Senegal.
This move was taken by the mayor, after the authorities seized his official car.

4 more Gambia ministers resign, flee country as crisis grows

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - Gambia's longtime leader Yahya Jammeh has lost four more of his ministers after they resigned and reportedly fled to neighboring Senegal, a political official confirmed Tuesday.
The move comes two days before Adama Barrow, the man who ousted Jammeh in the December election, vows to take power despite Jammeh's refusal to leave.
Gambia's foreign affairs minister, along with the ministers of finance, trade and environment, all have left the Jammeh administration, the political official in Banjul said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. The country's information minister earlier went into exile in Senegal.
Barrow is vowing to go ahead with his inauguration even as Jammeh says the country must wait for Gambia's supreme court to decide on the ruling party's challenge to the election results, a delay that could take months. On Monday, Gambia's chief justice recused himself and said he could not rule on Jammeh's request for an injunction blocking Barrow's inauguration.
Jammeh has ruled Gambia for more than 22 years. He initially went on state television to concede his election defeat, only to make a dramatic about-face a week later.
West Africa's regional bloc has a standby force for possible military intervention if Jammeh doesn't step down when his mandate ends this week.
The regional bloc, ECOWAS, has urged Barrow to stay in Dakar, Senegal until Thursday's inauguration for his safety. He was unable to leave Senegal on Monday to attend the funeral for his 7-year-old son, who was fatally mauled by a dog a day earlier.

Paralysis of the Ministries

 The day for end term of presidency for the incumbent is drawing near as the clock is ticking and some of his cabinet ministers are resigning thereafter. This reporter went to some of the ministries which include Ministry of the Interior, Finance, Trade, Fisheries, Justice and Foreign Affairs. Read to find out the observations and the findings.
At the Ministry of the Interior, an officer at the ministry who preferred anonymity told this reporter that the Minister was not at work yesterday but has been coming to work in previous days.
At the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, the security officer at the gate said the newly appointed Minister Mr. Roberts was at work but had left for home.
Mr. Abdou Jobe, the Minister for Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, has left the jurisdiction as confirmed by the security man there. The reporter reached there around 2 pm and was told that most if not all of the workers have gone home. He showed the Minister’s car parked with all the doors closed. He said they are yet to announce a new Minister.
It is at the Ministry of Justice where drama unfolded as it is the only place this reporter visited and discovered there was no one in the building not even a security agent. The reporter entered the building to see if there will be a possibility to meet at least a person working there but to his surprise, no one was seen in the whole building.
Visiting the Foreign Affairs Ministry, It was confirmed by a staff of the said ministry that the minister, Neneh Macdoull Gaye, has resigned and as at now no one has been assigned to replace her.
The Ministers of Education, both Higher and Basic, are confirmed to be working and have not resigned. The Minister of Basic Education, Madam Fatou Lamin Faye, is confirmed to be handling the position of Tourism alongside her Education Ministry. |
