Jammeh must give way to Adama Barrow
By Madi M.K.Ceesay
Daily News Sunday, December 11, 2016 http://dailynews.gm/africa/gambia/banjul/article/jammeh-must-give-way-to-adama-barrow-otherwise
President Jammeh must give way to President elect Adama Barrow in a smooth and peaceful transition; otherwise the civilized military will make him do so. The recent statement over the state own radio and television by the outgoing President is rather unfortunate that such is coming from someone like him . This is the man who was given mandate to rule the country for over 22 years by Gambians. These are the same Gambians who in the December 2016 presidential elections said no, this time; who then is Jammeh not to accept the verdict of Gambians? Interestingly he was the first to concede defeat and said Gambian has spoken. President Jammeh step down or else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The funny thing about President Jammeh is that after picking a phone and called President elect Adama Barrow on that fateful Friday congratulate him and he did not only congratulated Adama but went further to say the world should take cue from Gambia in the manner we conducted our elections. He said ours was the most transparent and freest elections ever held.
Is it not funny for him to come back only a few days to say he condemned the election results in its totality? Arguing that his supporters were told by polling staff that Adama has already won and there was no need for his supporters to vote. What a contradiction by President Jammeh; but for those who were following him for the past 22 years, they would know that he has been like that from day one. Can you recalled when he newly took over and there was pressure that he hands over power to a civilian, he offered an interview to a Senegalese television where he was quoted saying he will stay in power for 4 years before he hands over. But when the pressure was hard he said he did not say that what he said was he will be in power for years. This is the kind of person we have as president for 22 years.
Now coming back to reasons Jammeh advanced for not accepting the election results. He said that election officials drives his supporters from polling stations. What is Jammeh telling the whole world that his militants were all about violating election rules as on the day of the election no body is allowed to manifest ones political affiliations either by party color of photos. How then his supporters’ were identified?
President Jammeh should properly listen to the language of the international community “your refusal of the Gambian people’s decision will not be accepted and any person who wants to go against the decision of the Gambia people will face the stiffest resistance” Jammeh or any other person will be a fool if they think the international community is only making a mere statement.
Jammeh should take lessons from the people of Ivory Coast who voted out Loren Bagbagbo and replaced him with Allassan Watara; and he Bagbagbo refused the results and insisted that he will not leave the presidential palace for his successor what was then the result? When President Bailise Compuware was ousted in a mass protest and followed by elections; there was a palace coup and the winner suffered a little bit how did it ended?
President Jammeh must give way to a smooth and peaceful transition of power; he should know that there is no return and that democracy is winning and will continue to win.
