Gambia's Choice 2016

"Friday morning in Gambia: The outcome of yesterday's presidential election is still not clear. According to the state radio station GRTS, the Coalition candidate Adama Barrow has won in many constituencies. But no winner is declared and GRTS reports that they are now taking a break in the counting.
In previous presidential election - that Jammeh has always won in the last 20 years - the results were decided much faster.
The last time they tried was two years ago. It is currently possible to send SMS abroad, after this possibility been closed for 12 hours yesterday. Since all internet connections was closed by president Jammeh, all international telephone calls and the border to neighboring Senegal closed, the Gambia has been almost hermetically sealed.
There is still no unrest here, but an unusual silence everywhere.
No one wants to attract attention, people only go out if they have to.
After polling stations closed yesterday, people have been indoors waiting for the counting of the votes. Green balls for President, Jammeh, purple balls of Mamma Kandeh and gray balls for the big coalition candidate Adama Barrow.
How free and fair the elections have been, will possibly never be clarified.
The UN has sent representatives to the Gambia for the election, but when the EU wanted to send election observers, they were rejected. The African Economic and Monetary Union ECOWAS declined sending observers." Inger Anne Olsen, A Norwegian Journalist reporting from Gambia
