Dr. Isatou Touray, told opposition supporters in Jarra Soma on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 that they should embrace the coalition because it is well thought of and planned to reflect the interest and general wellbeing of Gambians.
Speaking earlier, Halifa Sallah, coalition spokesperson said election is not a joke and people must vote to salvage the country that finds itself in a deep hole. He said power belongs to the people and people must elect a president to take charge of the failing economy and security. He said election time is time to render account by scrutinising whether the president has fulfilled the promises he made five years before and based on that they should decide whether to retain or remove him or her.
“It is important to note that if you want to salvage the country you don’t only depend on taxes but you must rely on and utilize the natural resources that are found in the country. He said to effect change all the stakeholders will help Adama Barrow in the administration. He said staff of the national radio and television station will be free to talk about national issues without fear of dismissal. He added that following the three years of the transitional government a term limit will be imposed on the presidency.
He said it doesn’t require anger, insult or fight; that people should come and vote for Adama for us to take back our country.
Dr Isatou Touray said the population is dominated by women and youths who could decide for the best interest of the country. She said it is shocking to see the youths who left the country for a perilous journey to search for a better life die at sea.
She said the president has amended the constitution by removing the simple majority provision. This coalition is well thought and planned and the manifesto is well detailed and researched by all members and it was critically looked at to ensure it reflects the true interest of Gambians. She said to effect the needed change; young people must come out and vote. He said the coalition has one intention. “I am not a politician but I see that change must come for young people to live meaningfully in the country,” she asserted.
Adama Barrow said he wouldn’t relax because incumbency in Africa is always an advantage. He said there were talks in the newspapers that we wouldn’t unite as an opposition and opponents did all they could to block their move but they did succeed. He said there will be democracy and no fear of arrests and illegal detentions and disappearances will end under their government. He added that the President wouldn’t have all the powers to dismiss civil servants like what is happening in the Gambia currently.
