WHERE IS OMAR MALLEH JABANG? Foroyaa: November 11, 2016
QUESTION OF THE DAY
WHERE IS OMAR MALLEH JABANG?
http://www.foroyaa.gm/archives/12822
It is reliably learnt that in the morning of 10 November 2016, Omar Jabang was picked up by some people. At the moment family members are in a state of shock. They have not seen or heard from him since yesterday morning.
It is important for family members to go to the nearest police station and give a report of his disappearance and ask for his whereabouts. This is the starting point.
Foroyaa will make further inquiries to know his whereabouts. This is an election period and all Gambians are expecting a violence free election. The Inspector General of Police, Director General of the NIA and the Ministry of the Interior should do their best to ensure that there is no detention without trial.
In our view, this is the best time that the president should have made the decision to order the release of those convicted or on trial in connection with Solo Sandeng or his death. This would have moved the country to the path of reconciliation which is most needed during an election period.

OMAR JABANG ABDUCTED By Mustapha Jallow Foroyaa: November 14, 2016
Omar Malleh Jabang, a businessman, was abducted in broad daylight at Abuko Abattoir on Thursday 10 November 2016 by three omar-malleh-jabangmen in plain clothes, according to eye witnesses.
Sources at the Abattoir say the ardent supporter of the Independent Candidate, Dr Isatou Touray was picked up from the Abattoir between 9am and 10am by a white pick up with a numberless number plate. They added that they heard Omar asking them why he was being arrested and he was told that he would be told later; that two of them boarded the pick up with him while the third abductor drove Mr Jabang’s Pajero.
According to family sources Omar Jabang’s arrest was preceded by phone calls and tracking of his pajero by a black jeep. Unknown callers purporting to be calling from the PMO had asked him on two occasions to report for work as he was being reinstated to a job he lost some five years ago but that he did not go. However, when he was invited by a caller to the Abuko Abattoir he went and that was the time he was abducted. Family members say that they noticed that as Omar Jabang left his home in Nema Kunku the same black jeep followed him.
Family sources added that they received information of his abduction soon after it took place but whenever they called his four phone numbers the phones kept ringing without a response. They expressed concern for his safety and security.
They say they have reported the matter to the police at Nema Kunku and Bundung. The police at Nema Kunku have recorded the complaint in their diary while the police at Bundung have referred them to the PRO at the police headquarters in Banjul.

WHY IS OMAR JABANG STILL IN CUSTODY?
Fooyaa Editorial:November 16, 2016
http://www.foroyaa.gm/archives/12893
Some people claim that Omar Jabang was seen supporting Dr. Isatou Touray during her bid to be a presidential candidate. He is said to have later joined her to support the coalition. They are therefore wondering whether his abduction has any link to his political affiliation. The State has to explain.
The law is clear. Any arrested person should be taken before a court within 72 hours and charged or be released. To fail to do so is to be guilty of unlawful arrest and detention.
The allegation of politically motivated arrest requires immediate investigation into the cause of arrest. In the meantime, family members should not hesitate to take court action to ensure that the high court orders for his release. This will enable human rights defenders to intensify their efforts to facilitate his release.
