The arrestees of 14 and 16 April incidents have rights which deserve to be respected.
It is more than a month since the arrestees were put in custody.
People like Solo Sandeng and Touray Darboe are yet to appear in court as provided by law. Where are they? Family members are asking. The State has a duty to bring them to court or release them.
Every detainee has a right to fair hearing before an independent and impartial tribunal. Many arrestees are yet to be brought before court, even though they have been in custody for more than 72 hours.
All arrestees have a right to visitors, food and other necessities.
The cases are suffering delay because of their nature. Apparently, the actions were politically motivated and any criminal proceedings would not be able to keep the political undertones out of the legal proceedings.
Foroyaa is of the view that criminal proceedings in politically motivated cases are not the best way forward. The fact that the judge has recused from both cases speaks a volume.
