Gambia to receive 37MW energy power by 2018

The Gambia will receive 37 megawatts of electricity power from The Gambia River Basin Development Organisation (OMVG) Energy Project by 2018. This was disclosed by the executive secretary of the organisation, who added that as part of the regional integration process of the project, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal will all benefit from the multi-million euro electricity and water projects.
Justino Viera made these remarks yesterday during an operational briefing of the vice president and minister for Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy at her office in State House. Viera said they were also at Presidency to receive the blessings of the Gambian authorities regarding the four-member nation project.
He told the VP that given the power deficit in the region and the high dependence on imported oil and use of environmentally damaging hydrocarbon power generation, sites at Sambangalou on The Gambia River and Kaleta on the Konkoure River in Guinea were chosen. “The three physical components of the OMVG Energy Project are Sambangalou Dam, Kaleta Dam and an interconnection transmission line (T-Line) circuit linking the two dams to the electric grid of the four-member countries,” he said.
According to him, environmental impact issues of the project have been closely studied and that project totaled to 30 million euros. “For the construction at the Sambangalou site, we have already signed a contract with one Chinese firm and work should start very soon,” he said.
The Bissau-Guinean national further disclosed that Gambia’s counterpart funding of the project is 5.32 million euros, out of which 5% can be paid before the main financing of the project. “We also have a project called the integrated water resource management and the natural resource development project, which have started since 2004,” he said, adding that the project is a rural development project and have supported farmers and provide drinking water for people and animals.
Vice President Njie-Saidy in response commended Viera and the entire OMVG secretariat for its commitment to the realisation of the project. “You are addressing areas of interest of Gambia government. The environmental assessment impact of the project is important,” she said.
While assuring them of President Jammeh and the entire Gambia government’s commitment and support to the realisation of the project, the VP also called on them to maintain a thriving working pace towards the project.
Mass Axi Gai, the minister of Fisheries and Dr Edward Saja Sanneh, the minister of Energy both welcomed the development and called on the OMVG officials to show strong commitment in the realisation of the project.
“Based on Viera’s explanations, there is future in the project,” Energy Minister Sanneh added, noting that the project will not only provide energy but it also will also create and enhance socio-economic development in The Gambia.
Pa Ousman Jarju, the minister of the Environment, Climate Change, Water and Wildlife and Neneh Macduall-Gaye, minister of Foreign Affairs both congratulated the OMVG officials for the strive taken towards the project. “As a government, we are aware that the project will positively impact on the lives of Gambians. We will endeavour to do everything possible to make the project implemented,” Jarju assured.
“Energy and water are fundamental human needs in socio-economic development,” Macduall-Gaye added.
