I was surprise to learn that the rice varities being currently promoted in the Gambia are GMO rice. All the new varieties such as Narica, Kanilie, Kanfengda, Nr. 14 etc. etc. are all GMOs. How safe is this for us in future? Someone told me that we might face hunger because we will be depending on laboratories to continue supplying us with new seeds once our local seeds are extinct.
It is alarming that "GMOs pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown."

As usual it's about MONEY/POWER and multinationals who can do ALMOST what they like, a paragraph from the report reads:

"Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit."

Great for herbicide manufacturers and seed salesmen, presumably planted seeds grow but only bear sterile seeds, just the job for the North Bank Farmer !!! get real of course it's not!!! in an ideal world he should have his family survival and be able to sell and keep seeds some for use in the following growing season I understand that rice crops twice a year.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
