Gambia inks US$65M Trans-Gambia Bridge project
Daily Observer: Published on Wednesday, November 12, 2014
The government of The Gambia Tuesday morning signed with development partners a contract agreement for the construction of the long-awaited Trans-Gambia Bridge over the Bamba-Tenda Yelli-Tenda crossing.
The signing ceremony, held at the offices of the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, has now paved the way for construction to start, which is expected to last for 36 months.
The project, funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) at a tune of US$65M, is contracted to Isolux-Corsan and Areski Construction Companies with the consultancy services awarded to Setec Tepi/Studi International and Mahfoos consultancy firms.
The 942-metre bridge will connect the South and North Banks of The Gambia. Its completion is expected to enhance trade and easy movement between the two countries.
In his remarks at the occasion, the Transport, Works and Infrastructure minister, Ousman Badjie, said the Trans-Gambia Bridge project is a significant development in the history of the two countries.
“The bridge is the single biggest project ever that the government of The Gambia is starting thanks to the generous contribution of African Development Bank and other partners. The long-term aspiration of the government of The Gambia is to achieve solid infrastructural base for industrial development. Availability of infrastructure services significantly influences development between regions, but also between countries,” he said.

I am amazed,so little talking and ACTION being taken, very good I hope that local people will be employed (If they want to work and have the necessary skills )on this project and associated infrastructure, workers want to be fed therefore some great opportunities for women to play their part.

An Editorial from The D.O.
The trans Gambia bridge
Wednesday, November 12, 2014 Editorial
It is pleasant to hear that The Gambia with funding from the Africa development bank has signed the contract for the commencement of the construction of the much anticipated Trans-Gambia bridge project. The development is indeed a step towards regional integration and denotes commitment of the government in marching words with deeds as far as growth and development of the country and Africa at large is concerned.
Regional integration in its broad sense refers to the merger of the means of production, distribution and exchange of individual nations into a single community. The process entails connection of transportation, communication, infrastructure and all other tools that accompany the integration process. The ultimate of integration for the region and Africa at large is to make the phenomena of underdevelopment and poverty that has characterized the continent for centuries a thing of the past.
It cannot be argued otherwise that the bridging the Bambatenda-Yellitenda crossing will provide important links to both North and South of The Gambia and Senegal as well as important transport linkages for the sub-region. The construction of the bridge will further enhance regional trade through opening up of an important historical trading route in the Sahel as well as bring to fruition the dream of the West African Highway and in particular the realization of two countries but one between The Gambia and Senegal.
The facility will also support the implementation of the Gambia National Development Program - The Program for Accelerated Growth and Employment (PAGE), which succeeded the PRSP II. It has the potential to support macroeconomic stabilization, greater public sector efficiency and accountability which by themselves can provide the adequate setting for the reduction of poverty and socio-economic inequalities through agriculture, private sector, infrastructure and human resources development.
There is also no doubt that the budget support operation will help government deliver its development programs and focus on continuing and deepening efforts which among others is to restore budgetary discipline and financial stability and also to prevent accumulation of new public expenditure arrears.
The funding of the construction of the bridge by the ADB therefore confirms the confidence that the bank has in the policies and the economic management of the country. We finally commend both parts for taking a tangible step towards integration. Author: Daily Observer
