"an amazing unstable, challenging virus." Just like most of the world today

Very interesting article....an amazing unstable, challenging virus.
Data on how long infective EBOV can be present in other body fluids such as saliva, tears, urine, stool, breast milk, vaginal and amniotic fluid and seminal fluids, are still limited [4]. We do know that in the 36-year-old patient with EVD who was evacuated in August 2014 to an isolation facility in Hamburg, Germany, infective EBOV was still isolated from urine samples on day 26 of his illness, nine days after the clearance of EBOV from plasma [3]. We also know that EBOV can be isolated from convalescent patients in semen up to 82 days after disease onset [6]. However, in a study by Bausch et al., EBOV could not be cultured from the urine in 11 cases, but this might have been caused by virus degradation from breaks in the cold chain during sample collection, storage and shipping [4].

UPDATES 25 January The nurse who was infected with Ebola while working in Sierra Leone has been discharged from the Royal Free Hospital in London after making a full recovery. She was diagnosed with Ebola on 29 December and was admitted to the hospital on 30 December, after falling ill on her return to the United Kingdom. The Royal Free Hospital is the United Kingdom's main centre for Ebola cases.
Once this nurse regains strength, lets us see if the UK Government Panel on fighting Ebola attempt use this experienced ladies knowledge? |

A very good point sab,an answer if there were to be one would I suspect come some time in the future. The UK administration has other, what they may consider more pressing matters,Greece and the euro and oh yes, UKIP and what may happen in 100 days time. I consider what you have written in the copied quote below to be an additional plus to stem the ongoing march of this horrific sickness, which often brings death.
Money and power = politics.
Sab I have had a SMALL search around and can not find any contact for "UK Government Panel on fighting Ebola" It seem that to have a clear and uncluttered path to updates news and information about Ebola that is being left to the WHO. This link may interest you (and maybe others ?):

Thanks, this is what u need... COBRA - Cobra stands for Cabinet Office briefing room A. Cobra meetings are held in Downing Street, within Cabinet Office buildings. In most cases Cobra is convened as part of the civil contingencies committee, which plans government responses in times of emergency.

But the nurse in question is a very lucky lady, she knew she was not feeling well at the airport, BUT they insisted on relying on a machine, how many times, 7? I was trained not too trust the machine, LOOK (signs & symptoms)& LISTEN to the patient.

Thanks sab."LOOK (signs & symptoms)& LISTEN to the patient." that's total common sense and should be used through out the medical and nursing professions, only one problem too many people ill, HUMANS IN THE MEDICAL FIELD do not have the time to treat the ill as people and listen, far easier to plug in a machine and get "AN" answer which MAYBE wrong.

I know, but this nurse was in the warmth & bright lights of Gatwick. U have no defence for them, they were not deaf, the lady came from treating Ebola patients & did not feel well!!
I hope they have learnt from this case, it would be better the world never see's Ebola again, for sure like the 'flu epidemic' around 1918/1919 where around 50million died, Ebola it will never be forgotten.
Can anyone imagine 50million people dying in one year worldwide from a virus nearly one hundred years ago? |

Sab,I answered your posting on the specific point of maybe the nurse should be"headhunted" by the administration in Britain to give her on the ground experience input to the politicians and others at Cobra meetings,I being unable to find a specific,"UK Government Panel on fighting Ebola" in Sierra Leone, which was a country where the majority of people held cultural beliefs, which hindered treatment of those who had been infected with Ebola,to spread information and understanding of Ebola to the people took much more time than in other countries in West Africa where Ebola was present, in my opinion. Spanish Flu Epidemic of 100 years ago was VERY VERY TRAGIC, 50 MILLION DEAD,like you, I cannot imagine such a number, please remember that at that time in history there was no medicine that could be used to limit death.People were known to be fine in the morning and dead in the evening. Hopefully EBOLA has given all the world a big wake up call to develop a useable vaccine,I understand that 1st stage human trials are underway. VERY TRUE that the living conditions, medical expertise and hospitals in some parts Africa are different to those elsewhere, other countries in the world have been very quick to help African countries to deal with Ebola.

After such a terrible year from this disease, it is good to see the improvement.

But complacency still exists;
Sierra Leone: A two week door-to-door surveillance for unreported Ebola cases has been launched in Port Loko. The district, located 100 kilometers from Freetown, reported a surge in new cases last week, associated with unsafe burial practices and hidden Ebola patients. The first phase of the active search operation, ‘Western Area Surge’, aiming to contain the outbreak was initiated in December last year.
Health authorities have confirmed two cases today, both from Bombali. More than 2,800 patients have been treated and discharged as at 19 February. |

New Ebola case marks disease's return to Liberia
BBC Online
The body of a dead Liberian man has tested positive for Ebola - the country's first reported case since it was declared free of the disease.
Deputy health minister Tolbert Nyenswah said tests confirmed that the 17-year-old man, from a town near the main airport, had died of the disease.
Officials are investigating how he contracted Ebola, Mr Nyenswah said.
Liberia was declared free of Ebola six weeks ago, following the deadliest outbreak in the disease's history.
More than 11,000 people have died of the disease since December 2013, the vast majority of them in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
The countries had largely curbed the spread of the disease - but the number of new cases has risen recently, with the start of the rainy season in West Africa.
