1. SIC to assemble ‘intellectuals’ to address moon sighting controversies

Daily Observer News Wednesday, July 02, 2014

The president of the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) has spoken of the Council’s desire to convene what he called an “intellectual” conference to address the controversial issues relating to the sighting of the moon in The Gambia.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders and other scholars at the Banjul City Council (BCC) Chambers on the last day of the Council’s nationwide tour meant to introduce members of the newly elected executive, Alh. Imam Momodou Lamin Touray lamented the attitude of Muslims in the country, and called for a change.

Moon sighting has over the years been a thorny issue in The Gambia, creating divisions amongst Muslims as to when to begin Ramadan, Koriteh and Tobaski. The Supreme Islamic Council has since been insisting that The Gambia should begin Ramadan Koriteh or Tobaski the same day as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but some Gambians, especially those in the rural part of the country would not tow that line. Even this year, Muslims in The Gambia did not begin the Holy Month of Ramadan on the same day, meaning Koriteh will not be celebrated the same day.

But speaking in Banjul, the erudite Imam affirmed that it is part of the Council’s strategies to put an end to this religious division, and noted that one way of resolving it is to bring scholars to the table. “The Council has outlined strategies to avoid this difference in the country, and thus the intellectual conference that will be organised will make research and debate on the issue,” he told the meeting.......Full Report

Based on climatic differences, geographical location and position in World hemisphere by equator; UK, Norway & Europe presently need to fast for 20 hours (SUMMER SOLSTICE PERIOD longer days & shorter nights Sunrise approximately 2:30 am and sunset is 22:25) in one day while in Makkah Mukarramah or Madinah Munawwara the longest fasting period in one given day does not exceed 14 hours. Couldn't all human beings fast according to the Makkah or Madinah fasting schedule and normal hours of fasting there; as we consider moon sighting controversies? This trend will continue for few more years BUT it will change when the cycle shifts to WINTER SOLSTICE (longer nights and shorter days) in conjunction with Ramadan and that means we will be fasting shorter hours (6-8) hrs, revolving back and forth.

It must be noted that RULE STATED IN QURAN IS SUNRISE TO SUNSET AND SPECIFIED BY SUNNA (WHAT PROPHET MUHAMMAD MPUH PERFORMED).
