Going by the recitals of oral historians I seem to detect the celebration of certain ancient rulers but therein couched or cached in the stories are atrocities committed by the said rulers . Take for instance the story or history of Phoday Kabba Dumbuya in the Fonis to wit the dominion of the Jola tribal settlements. Reports have it that he was so wicked and some of his acts included breaking of peoples fingers when he grabs the jola subject fiercely .they cry in pain saying in pain "PHODAY OKAT" he breaks their fingers claiming tbey asked for such by the cries. Kati in mandinka meaning break..such callous acts were reported by our griots and evinced laughter or mirth but should have been condemned if not then but now. So a twerted mind today seems bent on a revenge of sorts against mandinka today because of what his tribe suffered historically. See his tirades against mandinkas and the trend flows on to attacking the colonialist too. Am I in a dream or denial check it out..I suggest we do not not celebrate such acts they are being done..the traditional historians perhaps are not mindful of the consequencies..such as misinterpretation by dictators to justify their acts now.
True Kaaniba. We should only be reminded and condemn the atrocities some of them committed and they should not be celebrated. I am definitely not proud of an ancestor who enslaved a fellow human being or committed atrocities.
A whole language group should not be blamed for what others did two or more centuries ago. By the way, the Mandinka of Northern Gambia were not involved in Fodey Kabba's crusade.
A clear conscience fears no accusation - proverb from Sierra Leone
Yes brother it's true one cannot and shouldn't apportion blame of past atrocities onto any current tribe or tribal groupings as if they are the actual perpetrators of such dastardly acts..however check the trend of doing so on the slave trade ..Holocaust and colonialism etc and demands for reparation..you will see what am talking about..an unscrupulous ruler then has some frivolous claim as that to behave ultra vires ..erm no excuse but there you go buddy. One have to dissect such a sick person's brain to detect his mindset.

Foday kabba's crusade also inflicted atrocities on mandinkas particularly in kiang. He was not a tribal warrior but a religious crusader just like Maba Jahou Bah who was a Fula and who also fought war in The Gambia in the name of religion.
Kanibaa, your tribal insinuation is tasteless. A lot of mandinkas were not Muslims and Foday Kaba was against them too.
Thanks
