 14 UDP Supporters Freed
1. Court Acquits UDP 14
The 14 United Democratic Party supporters were acquitted and discharged by a magistrate court in Brikama.
The supporters were arrested on February 2, 2014. They are Lamin Marong, Lamin Sonko, Foday Gassama, Maimuna Darboe, Ousman Drammeh, Sherrif Kinteh, Jerreh Fatty, Fakebba Colley, Sirreh Sonko, Bakary Gibbba, Wandifa Kinteh, Kawsu Jaiteh, Yaya Njai, and Lamin Njai. The supporters were charged for holding an illegal political meeting at Madiyana in the Kombo North constituency. Their February 10th charge followed the supporters’ illegal arrest and detention by the police.

In his ruling on both submissions on Saturday before a crowed court in Brikama principal Magistrate Dayoh Dago Small ruled that all the 14 accused persons have no case to answer. He further stated that everyone in the Gambia have fundamental rights to freedom of association and assemble. That no one needs a permit to hold meetings on a private property and also stressed that no one needs to inform the village Alkalo of his or her intention to hold a meeting in the village much more on a private property.
He therefore acquitted and discharged all the accuse persons on all counts.

Fourteen supporters of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) were Thursday acquitted and discharged by principal magistrate Dayoh M. Small-Dago of the Brikama magistrates’ court.
They are Lamin Marong, Lamin Sonko, Foday Gassama, Maimuna Darboe, Ousman Drammeh, Sherrif Kinteh, Jerreh Fatty, Fakebba Colley, Sirreh Sonko, Bakary Gibba, Wandifa Kinteh, Kawsu Jaiteh, Yaya Njai and Lamin Njai.
Their acquittal and subsequent discharged followed a ruling delivered on the no-case-to-answer submission made by senior defence counsel Ousainou Darboe.
Delivering his ruling, the trial magistrate said the accused persons were charged with two counts of unlawful assembly and prohibition of conduct conducive to a breach of peace, which they all denied
He said the prosecution called six witnesses, tendered three exhibits and then closed their case.
He added that the defence counsel made a no-case submission, stating that the prosecution had failed to substantiate a prima facie case, despite having called six witnesses.......
