I understand there are lots of different quality rices available in Gambian markets, from lots of different places around the world.

I want to buy a large bag of rice to feed a family for a month (roughly).

What should i expect to pay? Where is the best place to go to buy rice cheaply?

Really appreciate your help.

Reasonable Budget Rice Price Ranges D1,100 - D1,500 (taking into account high inflation / depreciation of dalasi & its impact on businesses) but refer on latest FOROYAA UPDATE:

PRICE HIKE IN BASIC COMMODITIES

Published on Thursday, 06 February 2014 | Written by Saikou Suwareh Jabai

The prices of some basic food items have continued to increase. This was revealed to this reporter who conducted a quick market survey to see the state of prices of commodities. It was put on record that the prices of some items like cooking oil have increased significantly as their supply is low in the market. One Alpha Omar Bah, a shopkeeper at the Serekunda market said that there has recently been some price increment in the market. He said the price of a 20 litre container of cooking oil has increased from D900 to D975, adding that the 10 litre container is now D500.

Alpha said the price of rice fluctuates within the range of D1050 to D1100, a bag of onion is D550 while a kilo of rice stands at D30. For potato, he said the bag is now D625 and a kilo is D31. When asked the reason for the hike, he lamented the high tax levied on the goods and the cost of transporting them to their selling points.

Abdourahman Jallow, a shopkeeper at Latrikunda market also reiterated the price hike of cooking oil and further went on to say that some shops do not have it as it is in short supply. He said he sells the 20 litre container of oil at D985 and the 10 litre container at D500. He said a bag of rice is available at D1100 and the bag of onions and potatoes at D550 and D640 respectively while the price per kilo is tagged at D30 and D32 respectively. He said a tin of tomato paste is D110 and a box of garlic is D575. For the price of fish, sellers said it varies, depending on its availability.

However, at the time of going to press, three pieces of bonga (‘chaloo’) costs D10. This reporter took time to sound the views of some customers, among them, one Mariama Dem, who all decried the high price of basic commodities. Mariama said the market situation is terrible. She said prices are just increasing.

In her words: “I wonder why because GRA said VAT is exclusive on food items but I don’t believe this because that is what the sellers are using to increase the prices.”

The prices were confirmed by a shopkeeper Mr. Muctar Zaite, a Mauritanian national who is also trading at the said market. The customers jointly called on the government to urgently intervene and help remedy the situation as it is impeding the livelihood of the majority who are low income earners.
