Guinea deaths: Ebola blamed for deadly fever outbreak

BBC: 22 March 2014

The Ebola virus has been identified as the cause of an outbreak of haemorrhagic fever now believed to have killed nearly 60 people in southern Guinea, government officials say.

Scores of cases have been recorded since the outbreak began early last month.

There is no known cure or vaccine for the highly contagious Ebola virus.

It is spread by close personal contact with people who are infected and kills between 25% and 90% of victims.

Symptoms include internal and external bleeding, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Outbreaks of Ebola occur primarily in remote villages in Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests, the World Health Organization says.

Analysts suggest it has never been recorded in Guinea before.

Recent years have seen outbreaks in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

'Overwhelmed'

"We got the first results from Lyon yesterday (Friday) which informed us of the presence of the Ebola virus as the cause of this outbreak," Guinean health ministry official Sakoba Keita told AFP.

Where does Ebola originate? How do people catch it? Is the source from eating bush meat?

Have there been cases in Gambia in recent years?

So many questions!

Appreciate any replies.

Gambia on alert after Guinea, S/Leone Ebola outbreak
By Momodou Faal
Daily Observer: Monday, March 24, 2014

Health authorities in The Gambia appear to have been alerted by the deadly outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever – Ebola disease – in neighbouring West African countries after 59 out of the 80 people infected in Guinea reportedly died, whilst Sierra Leone is making efforts to contain it.

The Daily Observer Sunday afternoon gauged the reaction of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for comments on the potential threat the highly contagious disease poses to the population, and from all indications they are ready to deal with it in case of any suspected incident.

“The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare would like to inform the general public of the outbreak of ebola virus in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The general public is hereby informed that the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is fully aware of the situation and closely monitoring it. All the required logistics and manpower are readily available to deal with the situation in case of any suspected or confirmed case of the disease.

The general public should look out for the following signs and symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weakness, bleeding from the nose, mouth, anus and vagina plus history of travel or occupational exposure to wild life. All suspected cases should be reported to the nearest health facility. The disease is serious and contagious. Once again the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare wishes to assure the general public that there should be no cause for alarm,” it concluded.

About Ebola
Ebola virus is an uncommon viral infection which kills nearly 90% of its victims. Researchers from the National Institute of Health (NIH) have identified five types of Ebola virus and discovered something in the virus that causes the significant internal bleeding that almost always results in death. The viral glycoprotein is believed to destroy endothelial cells that line the walls of the blood vessels.

Causes of Ebola virus
Ebola hemorrhagic fever (also called Ebola fever) is the human disease associated with the Ebola virus and it happens when the virus enters the body.

Four of the five Ebola viruses cause disease in humans. The four deadly variants are: Bundibugyo virus, Ebola virus, Sudan virus, and Taï Forest virus. So far, only parts of Africa have reported the disease in humans, but the Reston type of Ebola virus (not harmful to humans) has now been identified by scientists in the Philippines.

"only parts of Africa have reported the disease in humans"

I have heard rumors that MAYBE SOME outbreaks are related to human consumption of "bush meat"

BBC NEWS UPDATES:

Fruit bats are believed to be a major carrier of the Ebola virus but do not show symptoms

1. Guinea Ebola outbreak: Bat-eating banned to curb virus

Guinea has banned the sale and consumption of bats to prevent the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, its health minister has said.

Bats, a local delicacy, appeared to be the "main agents" for the Ebola outbreak in the south, Rene Lamah said.

Sixty-two people have now been killed by the virus in Guinea, with suspected cases reported in neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Ebola is spread by close contact. There is no known cure or vaccine.

It kills between 25% and 90% of victims, depending on the strain of the virus, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Symptoms include internal and external bleeding, diarrhoea and vomiting......

Tests on the suspected cases of deadly Ebola virus in Guinea's capital Conakry are negative, health officials say.

On Sunday, United Nations officials said that the virus had spread to the capital, a port city of up to two million, from remote forests in the south, where some 61 people have died.

The government has sent out text messages, urging people to stay calm and wash their hands with soap.

I have just been listening to the news about Ebola on newsnight.

It seems to be spreading across boarders due to people travelling more these days.

So far we haven't heard of any cases in Senegal or Gambia. Let's hope that continues to be the case.

Yesterday it looked as if Ebola had come to Gambia, today they are saying these people didn't have it. Can we trust the information?

I hope everyone in Gambia is doing their best to avoid infection. Stay in Gambia (don't travel to other West African countries). Avoid contact with people you don't know (hand shakes, kiss, sex).

Funerals of dead need to be timely and without people touching the body unless necessary.

People shouldn't be eating any forms of bush meat.

I have the luxury of postponing my trip until later in the year.
People living in West Africa have to cope with the uncertainty of Ebola.
I really hope it is contained. Take care. x

Now it is looking as if I was over cautious postponing my trip, but as I was travelling alone my husband was very concerned about my safety re Ebola.
Gambia Experience have been very helpful and allowed me to move my booking, but I had to decide by last Friday.

Quite understandable Gambiabev,as a lover of The Gambia it must have been a bitter blow to read about this horrific illness outbreak Africa with no known cure, but your husband pointed out the risk that you MAY be taking and you changed your mind, no one would wish their loved ones to take a risk with their health.
Rest assured the Gambian authorities would wish to take all measures possible to safeguard their population AND TOURISTS a major income earner for Gambia.

“Lab Tests on Ebola proves negative” SAYS DIRECTOR OF HEALTH PROMOTION
By Samba Bah

Foroyaa: Published on Tuesday, 08 April 2014

Mr Modou Njai, the Director of Health Promotion and Communication at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, disclosed that laboratory tests for the specimens taken to the Pasteur Institute in Dakar, Senegal, from the two patients who were under investigation have indicated negative for Ebola. This recent development, he said, has therefore ruled out Ebola in the Gambia as of now. Talking to this reporter in an interview in his office at the Medical Central Stores in Kotu on Friday, 4 April, Mr. Njai said they would want to take this opportunity to assure the general public that the health officials are not resting on their laurels and would continue to remain vigilant and intensify all the necessary preparatory measures that are put in place.

Mr Njai therefore calls on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected case of Ebola to the nearest health facility.
The Director of Health Promotion and Communication again reminded the public that the signs and symptoms of Ebola are similar to some other conditions, but they may include vomitting, diarrhoea, sore throat, joint and muscle aches, stomach pain, headache and red eyes.
He added that bleeding from body openings may be seen in some patients and people can be exposed to Ebola virus from direct physical contact with body fluids like blood, saliva, stool, urine, etc of an infected person and soiled linen used by a patient.

Emphasising the need for prevention since there is no cure for Ebola yet, Mr. Njai advised that people should avoid direct contact with body fluids of a person suffering from Ebola or has died of the disease and that strict personal hygiene through hand-washing should be observed at all times.
He said the Ministry is grateful to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations System for regularly providing technical support and guidance to the current efforts to prevent Ebola from spreading into the Gambia as well as the Medical Research Council, the National Disaster Management Agency, the National Security Services and other government sectors.

That's a nice touch all too often in Gambia gratitude to the help provided by other organisations and agencies is totally overlooked praise being given only to local Gambian involvement.
All people like to be appreciated for what they do.

1. Senegal- Closed borders

Guinea records more cases and deaths, as Senegal shuts crossings amid reports of cases in other neighbouring states.

Health officials are racing to contain a deadly Ebola epidemic in Guinea, with one neighbouring state closing its borders and two others reporting cases amid warnings of a “serious threat” to the region.

Senegal on Saturday said its border crossings to Guinea would be closed “until further notice”, while neighbours Liberia and Sierra Leone have reported suspected cases of the disease.

Guinea said on Saturday the number of suspected cases of Ebola stood at 111, with 70 deaths. Most cases were in the southern forested areas but eight cases had been confirmed in the capital, Conakry, with one death.

The World Health Organisation said neighbouring Liberia had reported six of eight suspected cases of Ebola feverhad resulted in death, while Sierra Leone had reported six suspected cases, five of them fatal.

All of these reported cases had recently travelled to Guinea, the WHO said......

2. Gambia bans airline passengers from Freetown, Monrovia, Conakry

Monday, April 14, 2014

The Gambian authorities have ordered four airline companies operating in The Gambia, “not to pick up passengers in Freetown, Monrovia and Conakry as inbound passengers to Banjul.”

The Point can confirm that a letter dated 10th April 2014 conveying the ban, “with immediate effect and until further notice”, was sent from the ministry of Transport in Banjul to the country manager Brussels Airline, country manager Arik Airlines, managing director Gambia Bird, the country manager Royal Air Maroc. It was copied to the director-general Gambia civil aviation authority.....

3. The Gambia- Flight Restriction Imposed

Sierra Leone authorities were cautious in responding to the reported flight restriction imposed by Gambia on all passengers from three West African capitals over fears of the Ebola virus.

The Gambian move which also targets Guinea and Liberia, which together with Sierra Leone constitute the three neighbours at the epicentre of the region’s first ever Ebola epidemic, prohibits all Banjul-bound airlines from carrying passengers from these countries.

Gambian airline authorities were quoted confirming the indefinite ban in response to the Ebola outbreak which has so far claimed over 100 lives in Guinea and Liberia.

To date, Sierra Leone has recorded no confirmed case, even though victims have died of symptoms similar to those associated with the Ebola virus.

Dozens of passengers were reported stranded at the Freetown International Airport in Lungi as the privately owned Gambia Bird flight left behind its passengers in line with the Banjul directive....
