1. Renowned Kora Player Opens Music School In the Gambia Reported by Suntu Touray

The world renowned female kora player and singer has opened a music school in the Gambia.

Sona Jobarteh, a descendant of the legendary kora maestro Amadou Bansang Jobarteh, has performed at many famous jazz scenes. She has earned respect among most traditional Gambian and Malian kora players.

Being a mix race does not prevent Sona from speaking fluently in Mandinka. She uses the language to sing, which makes her outstanding and her music becoming more appealing to many people. Sona’s famous songs include diaraby [lover], Allalake [God willing] and Musow [woman].

Sona’s success in intertwining and embodying the best of both the western and African culture has turned her into an icon, especially to many children born to European mothers. The opening of a music school clearly manifests Sona’s goals of making a difference in people’s life.

“I am very happy and proud to announce a project that has been years in the mind, and at last has come to fruition,”she said. “THE AMADOU BANSANG JOBARTEH SCHOOL OF MUSIC (in honor of my Grandfather) will be a school dedicated to the study of Manding music for Gambians and international students from around the world.” Sona describes the opening as a big success and therefore offers special thanks to “Rockers Lamin Suso, Sheriffo Kanuteh, all my family and everyone that has helped me out so much. Video will be coming soon! We need as much support as possible so if you would like to find out more please feel free to contact me for more information.”
