Author stated source as quoted; "Reports say the president made the announcement when he addressed his Cabinet in an emergency meeting in the capital on Monday night."?
And Daily observer newspaper pro-government covered report of the emergency meeting that; "Commenting on politics, the Gambian leader again declared that he will not campaign with anyone for the presidential seat in the forthcoming 2011 election, which will mark the end of his third five-year term, and urged the citizens to be grateful to him in view of the numerous developments and transformation he brought to the country. He noted that election is enshrined in the country’s constitution, something he said should be respected."

The reporter must have confused not campaigning with not running for office. I guess in the Gambia it is possible to seek office without campaigning. |
