We agree that religion cannot go with politics! However religion has a role to support any government to maintain peace and stability, in my opinion. Religious leaders have traditional ceremonial roles, they serve as respected faculty of wisdom to intervene in controlling conflict or conflict mediation, guiding and advising ruling government. There is no way that they can be divorced from being on the politics of the nation? They are part of the government to guide people from their sermons in churches and mosques; based on the Bible or The Holy Quran!
Am not taking brief for Bishop Tilewa Johnson but does not see him compromising his faith to serve the Independent Electoral Commission; albeit appointed by Jammeh. That appointment was to serve his nation with transparency, integrity and credibility! If we can reflect back, those were days Gambia wanted to be back on track with proper elections. There was the need to elect men of high integrity to serve the IEC, so why not Bishop Tilewa Johnson; a highly intelligent and good community leader? The IEC was purported to be AN INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COUNCIL and when Bishop Tilewa Johnson was there; that's what we thought? |

Kobo, please delve into some history and check out the complicity of the Roman Catholic Church in both the murders of millions of Jews in World War II and the Rwandan Genocide. You see, when the religious authorities decide to promote peace in a society that lacks justice, the powers that be always mistake it as a tacit sign of approval of their brutal ways.
Tilewa Johnson and others cannot be precluded from being criticized for The Gambian morass because each citizen is a stakeholder in his or her country's fate. The title of priest does not make you any more special than the average individual next door. |

Am not going to far on history but focusing on Bishop Tilewa Johnson's role to answer a national call for civic duty during the transition! He executed impartially and gracefully accepted to leave when his appointment was revoked on political grounds. Since then we don't hear him in politics of The Gambia. I disagree that he deserved to be rank amongst those prominent Gambian Christians used and discarded by our ruthless and manipulative dictator? He came into IEC TO SAVE GAMBIAN DEMOCRACY AND FORWARD THE NATION! AM NOT SURE WHETHER HE INHERITED ANY CRISES (i.e. ADVANCED FAULTS/QUERIES/PROBLEMS/POLITICAL BLUNDERS) FROM HIS PREDECESSOR FORMER IEC CHAIRMAN GABRIEL ROBERTS; WHO APPEAR TO FIT AS A PUPPET OR CRONY OF THE REGIME?
IN MY OPINION RELIGIOUS LEADERS SHOULD BE PART OF GENERAL COUNCIL OF ELDERS TO TO EXECUTE CERTAIN CEREMONIAL OR TRADITIONAL FUNCTIONS FOR THE STATE; INCLUDING ADVISING, MEDIATING & INVOLVING IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION FOR THE HEAD OF STATE AND THE COMMON GOOD OF THE NATION!
What interest me also is The Roman Empire and the Pontious Pilate story in condemnation of a Prophet (Jesus Christ/Essa P.B.U.H). In your words quoted; "....from a historical perspective, one can successfully posit that they run parallel to that of Pontious Pilate, the Roman administrator of Judea when Christ was accused by the Sanhedrin of blasphemy and brought before Pilate's makeshift court to face sentencing."
The foregoing statement is very refreshing for all generations of politics and authoritarian rule. Now we have America and so-called alliances/West against Islam and Prophet Muhamad (P.B.U.H). In as much as Jesus suffered with false accusations, so the propaganda against Prophet Muhamad and Islam till dooms day! They run parallel with that story of Christ and politics confronting religion. History always repeats itself! Jesus Christ/Essa (P.B.U.H) is still rejected by the Judaism/Jews as so-called "Messiah" and same as Christians rejecting Prophet Muhamad (P.B.U.H)
The world problems are the materialism, money, greed and power! We are all part of the devil of an economic system and dynamics of a market system? So this applies to all of us; John 8:7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, ""He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her." |
